Target

As of this morning, it is the big story.  Almost all the 1,400 stores across the nation have been affected by the point of sale stealing from just before Thanksgiving through 12/15.  And now I'm freaking out because I bought baking supplies there on 12/13.

They're saying to keep a close eye on your credit card and bank account statements.  They also think it was an inside job since it didn't affect online purchases, just the ones in stores.

Re: Target

  • I saw this yesterday. I have the Target card that's linked to my debit card. I'm consistently checking my account to see if anything happens, but I know my bank usually keeps an eye out for fraud cases like this. I will most likely give them a call today about it.

  • I'm just going to call and request new cards for the cards I have used there during the breach.  They will issue new card numbers and that will take care of it.  A bit of a pain, but it's better than having to worry about it.

  • And for the record - this is why I prefer credit cards over debit cards.  Credit cards have better consumer protection laws when stuff like this happens.  They're also not linked to a bank account.

  • Darn it!

I have the Target debit card. This is the first I'm hearing about it. This is ongoing?

  • They fixed the problem December 15th, so I guess anything after that is fine.

  • I haven't noticed any strange activity on my debit, but I'm trying to log in to change my pin and the site seems to be down. I'm guessing it's overloaded, but is anyone else having the same problem?
  • Yes, I can't login either. I thought it was my work computer. Do you think if we haven't had any problems yet we're good? I'll still change my PIN
  • The news article I listened to said that the investigation could go on into January, especially if anyone's numbers were used.  I'd still change it to be safe.  I'm getting a new card and PIN to be on the safe side.

  • Yeah the site is down and their call center is overloaded.

I'm going to call tomorrow or Saturday and see if I can get through then to get a new card issued.

In the meantime, check your statement for last month and next month when they arrive to make sure no fraudulent activity has occurred.  If you notice something fishy, call and tell them.  They are obligated to investigate it for you under consumer protection laws.  I've had fraudulent charges appear on a couple credit cards over the years and never had issues getting them reversed.  You just have to be vigilant about it and it's best to call the moment you notice something.  I check all our credit cards online every few days to monitor for this sort of thing.  The earlier you call, the more willing they are to work with you because you're likely to remember your purchase history accurately if it's only been a few days.

Luckily, with all the hubbub over this it seems really unlikely that the stolen card numbers will be used over the next couple of days.  That ought to give folks time to block their old cards and get new ones issued.

Still good to follow up on it though.

I do think we're good but will definitely change my pin as well!
  • Sadly, this isn't the first time Target has had issues.  Their data protection practices are downright scary.  They were caught a few years ago sending transaction data (including CC/debit card info) in the clear over wireless with no encryption.

Changing your pin won't help in this case. The information they gathered from the cards allows them to make a new card with your number. They don't even need your pin for this.

Banks are required by Visa and MasterCard to protect customers who have fraudulent activity on their debit cards. I think the most you can be liable for with Visa is $50. I'm not sure about MC.

I, and I believe several of the other PPs, have Target's debit card which is linked to a checking account (not a Visa or MC).  I haven't had any fraudulent activity (and I check my account daily so I would definitely notice) and am going to change my pin as soon as I can log in online but also call and order a new card to be safe once the phone lines clear a bit.  In any case, it would not be possible to use my card without my pin-it is required for all transactions.  My real concern would be that they could use whatever info they stole to get my checking account information, but I'm not sure if it works that way or not.
  • I have used my credit card and my Target red card there like 8 times since Thanksgiving so I am watching both closely to make sure nothing happened!!

Gotcha, sorry, I thought you were talking about bank debit cards. I'm not sure how that works!

  • Bank debit cards are monitored through their departments that handle debit cards. If you call your bank and let them know your card was used during this time, they will note your account and keep an eye out. If they see your card was compromised, they will shut off your card and send you a new one. They will dispute your transaction for you. I just received an email from my bank yesterday notifying me of this.

  • I got an email from my bank, too, but when I talked to them yesterday about my concerns, they were really nice and let me go ahead and get a new card.  Even though there hasn't been anything suspicious.

It seems like every few years one of the major retailers is hit by this problem. Fraudsters get creative.

All you can really do is be vigilant and track your accounts. And no, you don't need to stop shopping at Target. You are just as likely to become a victim of fraud in the drive-thru lane, at an ATM or another store.

For someone who asked, I think MC has a $0 liability. I have had my MC compromised about 2 times and it's never an issue.

Yes, it is easier to get reimbursed by CCs than it is by DCs. The reason is that DCs are managed by banks and banks want to verify every transaction before reimbursing. I used to handle this sometimes for my bank customers...it can take weeks. CCs typically are a few days at most. One reason I dislike DCs.

Another reason I dislike DCs is the access to the checking account. If you lose money from checking due to a fraudster, how will you pay the bills while the bank is figuring it out??? If you lose money on a CC, it has no affect on your checking and you can carry on business as usual with your expense paying while the CC company resolves the issue. Way safer, IMHO. A CC is a buffer to your financial life. A DC provides direct access.
