Re: TFiOS Movie Poster

  • I still need to read this.

But I don't feel like I'm emotionally capable to handle it. Everyone I know who has read it like puts their hand over their heart or looks super depressed every time it's mentioned. Lol. I'm going to read it next anyway I think.

  • I don't think I like the text on the poster.  One sick love story?  I mean, it is a love story and about being sick but I don't know...it rubs me the wrong way.

I didn't even notice this because I was looking at the actors.

  • the 'One sick love story' is almost like they are trying to make it into a comedy or give it a lighter feel.  DOES NOT WORK.

Yes!  And it's totally misleading.  If they haven't read the book and go into it thinking it's going to be a comedy or something they're going to be pissed.  I mean, there are points of levity in the book but people need to know to bring a box of kleenex with them.

Right. It would be one thing if it was starring the cast of Anchorman or something. But...ugh, no.

It's updated! John Green responds to the tagline, along with many fans who hate it.

    ETA: He likes it.

  • His response seems less than clear. I wonder if he has mixed feelings about it.

Upon rereading I think I agree with you. It seemed like he was hesitant to bash them any.

  • Love the image. Hate the tag line.

Agreed. He's not going to bash them, no matter what he really thinks. Though, reading his response I do sort of see what he's saying and I saw a comment on twitter that said that would so be something Augustus would say which I kind of agree with. But I still don't like it.

I agree that it makes it sound like it is some sort of comedy.

My first thought was that it was totally something Augustus would say.  It's completely inappropriate and kind of misleading, but also has multiple meanings... (sick - unwell, gross, cool, intense, perverted, cruel, etc)  It's immature and doesn't represent the depth of the story or the emotions involved.

one of the buzzfeed commenters said, and I think I agree, it's so awful, it's really clever (paraphrased).

ETA if you haven't read the book, I agree it probably comes off as a comedy though.
  • I just asked DH (he hasn't read it).  His first impressions:  "So, she has cancer. Teenage romance. And... umm... it might be a comedy? ... I don't expect them to live at the end, but... "
  • Not a fan of the tag line. AT ALL. EVER.

  • The tagline doesn't bother as much as the fact that Hazel looks completely healthy. It's like they thought, "Hey, if we just put a nasal cannula on her everyone will think she is sick"!

I would expect Hazel to look a little dusky considering she has chronic hypoxia. Also, the fact that she has no evidence of prednisone induced moon face.

  • I get what it's about and why it's there. I just don't like it. It probably is something Augustus might say but...it's still incredibly off putting to me.

I agree. Hazel does not like like how she should. I'm not really a fan of the poster at all.

This is exactly what I was thinking. If they make her look exactly how that actress normally looks, and maybe have her out of breath sometimes, I'm going to be really annoyed.
