Credit Bureaus and Name Changes

Potentially obvious question:

I got married in August and changed my name in early September.  Credit Karma still has me down as my maiden name (and required my social to find me at all, which it doesn't for most people), and when I recently tried to apply online for the Fidelity Amex it said that my social security number could not be verified.  I didn't pry into at the time and figured I'd try again in a few months, but my credit is good so I would not expect to be denied.  Do I need to call or write to the credit bureaus to have them register my name change?

Re: Credit Bureaus and Name Changes

  • I don't necessarily have advice, but I did not have to do anything other than change my name with the SSA. My name updated on credit reports along with the update to social security.
  • The credit bureaus update slowly over time.  Usually on cc applications there is a line that asks for any previously used names, and they will run a credit check on both.  If not, I would call Fidelity and see if somebody can run the check for you under your maiden name but issue a card to you under your married name.

You can call the credit bureaus and get it updated if you want, but it should happen on its own eventually.

  • Thanks ladies!

Mostly unrelated, but I'm going to hold off on the new CC for now.  I'm not sure I'm ready to work cards for points quite yet.  I was so full of enthusiasm about turning our finances around when we started a couple of months ago, but now the reality of "this is really hard" is starting to sink in and I want to be sure to stay away from temptation.
