Ok, so my mom is in the hospital. She has diverticulitis and had a really bad flare up and infection so they admitted her to be monitored until it clears up. She will eventually need surgery, but they want to wait until after the holidays. I was going to see her tonight with my brother, but she's telling me not to go. She's worried about me getting sick and it affecting the baby. I just got a call from her boyfriend (almost like a stepdad although they're not married), reiterating that I shouldn't go because it's not worth the risk. She should be home by Saturday. I just feel bad not going to visit her while she there. Would you go anyway or wait until she's back home?

No, I would not risk it. Call her, talk on the phone and be supportive but don't go.

I wouldn't go. That's a whole lot of germs floating around. I think she'd understand just a phone call.

I will say, I did go to the hospital once early on in this pregnancy, but it was because DH's Uncle was in ICU and we knew that there was a high probability that he wouldn't make it. That's the only reason I went. H's grandmother was furious with me for about a week because I went.

Again I'm learning through posts! Thank you for asking this. I didn't realize that you wouldn't go to a hospital due to germs. Makes sense of course, but it just hadn't occurred to me.

I agree with PPs then- best not to go. Diverticulitis is the kind of thing that flares up from time to time. She'll be home in a couple days and you can talk to her on the phone.

Personally, if it were my mom, I'd go. Your mom's infection isn't contagious and as long as you wash your hands, you shouldn't have any problems during a short visit. A lot of hospitals supply face masks too, if you're extra concerned, but as long as you're not licking the floor, you'll be fine, trust me. I spent 36 hours+ a week working in the ER my entire pregnancy and I only got sick twice (once from a patient who vomited directly on me, and I got a cold after I was already on maternity leave, so it wasn't even from work).

I agree with tdmd. I worked at a hospital through my pregnancy so I wouldn't think twice about it. I think the most important thing is to wash your hands and to be careful not to touch your face/mouth/eyes.

It's probably best not to go, but if it were my mom there would be no keeping me away. Just take extra precautions if you do decide to go.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up not going. Instead I went to her house and wrapped Christmas gifts. She was really stressing about them not being done. I also took her dog home with me so she won't have to worry about him being taken once she's home. It made me feel better that I did something to help at least. I'll see her over the weekend once she's out of the hospital. Plus we talk everyday (usually more than once) so it's not like I haven't talked to her.
