Intro and Question

Hello everyone!

I haven't been lurking long, so I am still trying to figure out the language (I have the glossary up and at the ready for reference!), but I wanted to introduce myself. I also apologize if my question is redundant, I promise I will do better at reading more in the future. :-)

My H and I got married in October, and we are planning to start TTC sometime in 2014. We've been together for 8 years and have lived together for 2+. 2013 was a big year for us because we bought a house together and had our wedding - I am looking forward to the next step!

My question - and I am not looking for medical advice I am just interested in learning about others' experiences - how long did it take you to regulate your periods/OV?

My situation - I was on the depo shot, and got my last shot in May 2013 which ran out of total effectiveness in August, at which point I went on BCP. I took BCP until the wedding, which I got a period when I stopped the pills in early October, but haven't had one since. I am not worried at this point, but I think if I don't get one by the time we come back from our honeymoon in February I am going to make an appointment with my OBGYN.

Thanks, and I look forward to getting to know everyone more!

  • Welcome!

The rule of thumb is to take an HPT once per week until you either get a positive or you hit 60 days. If you're not charting, you don't have any idea if/when you may have O'd, and at 60 days it's time to call the doctor. They'll probably prescribe Provera, which is an oral med you take for several days that brings on your period.

You definitely must take an HPT before you can take the Provera though, to be absolutely certain you are not pregnant. Your doctor may also want you to take another one in the office.

  • Thank you @LuckAngel07 - I did not know that, I read something online that said 3 months. It's definitely been more than 60 days. I haven't taken a HPT yet, but we've been using condoms so I am pretty confident that I am not PG, but I will take one this weekend and call my doctor.
  • What were your periods like prior to BC (birth control)? This could have a huge factor on regulating. I was off BCP (birth control pills) for a considerable amount of time before AF (Aunt Flow/ period I hate the first term but it's common around here) showed up on her own, but I only typically get my period 2 times a year on my own. So it really is different for everyone. Rule of thumb is wait a year for your periods to regulate.

Also, welcome! Good luck with your journey and enjoy your honey moon!
  • Welcome and congratulations on your marriage!

My body never regulated off of BC, but I'm not the average person.  There was 1 normal cycle the month after I stopped, and ever since they've all been long cycles where I have to take Provera to end them.

Ditto Lucky's advice. My Dr told me to either start charting or take a HPT once a week after 28 days until I get a positive or till it's 60 days.  Then call in for a prescription.  Although my first time I called in, they scheduled an appointment to discuss what was going on with me.  We too were using a barrier method BC. So taking a HPT was weird, because I knew we had prevented that whole time.

  • Welcome.  I don't have any advice as my cycle remained just as regular as when I was on BCPs.

    Good luck!

  • Honestly, I can't remember what my cycles were like pre-BC because I have been on some form of it since high school. My vague recollection is that they weren't all that regular but I don't know for sure.

Also, while I was on BCP I always skipped my period - hopefully that didn't f things up too bad, but my OBGYN never had any issue with it. At my last annual I talked to her about TTC in 2014 and she didn't mention any of this, though she knew that I hadn't been getting periods while on Depo. I think I am going to call.

    Thanks for the advice ladies!

I am really looking forward to the honeymoon - we live in WI so it will be wonderful to escape the cold!!!
  • Welcome!

It took me a while to regulate, but that is because I have PCOS and never really had regular periods before going on BC.  Hopefully yours will regulate soon!

  • Welcome!

I don't have normal cycles so no regulation here. But as PP said, pee on a stick once a week, if you reach 60 days with no positive or period call your doctor.

Welcome. My periods were always normal, but I too switched up different types of Bc to make it to the wedding. One of which was depo. It took me probably 4-5 months before I became regular again and had a lot of breakthrough bleeding. I definitely wasn't ovulating during that time. I'd prob set up an obgyn appt for the beginning of the year either way so that you're on the Same page, can ask questions, see if there's any testing she does routinely. And start taking prenatal vitamins if you're not already.
