Gifts for Nurses?

I keep reading conflicting thoughts on whether to send something to the nurses that cared for us while in the hospital. I know it's their job but should I send a little extra or just leave it at that. Did any of you ladies do anything? or do you moms-to-be plan to?

Re: Gifts for Nurses?

  • As a technician in the medical field, we love little notes and boxes of chocolates, etc to be acknowledged. Even though we get paid to do what we do, it's nice to be noticed by the people we care for, not just our employees. Just thought I'd add the perspective of a health care worker. :-)
  • I'm leaning toward doing a little something, especially since it will be the holidays. But I'm eager to hear others thoughts on this.

  • @blueeyedblossom this is good to hear. I know it's their "job" but with hospitality being pretty much almost non-existent these days, it's nice when people don't just do their job. They give a little extra.

  • I had several shift changes while I was there, so although they were great, I don't remember their names. And the thought never really occurred to me.

  • I had a large bowl of chocolates outside our room with a thank you note to the nurses. They all loved it and it made us feel good!

Of course it's their "job" but it's such a personal experience to share with them... They deserve a little extra thanks I think.

  • I'm planning on doing something for them, my sister is a CNA and I asked her about it - she said she would think they would appreciate any gesture, especially chocolate!

  • Something little, like chocolate, is always nice. The best thing you can do is give a nurse a nice review if the hospital has comment cards or does follow up phone calls. They do get back to us, they are remembered during our reviews, and it's nice to be acknowledged in that way.
  • While I was in the hospital with Cora I was planning on doinh coffee and donuts but we had soaby issues it slipped my mind. I would like to do that this time.

  • A written note to the department head with specific names goes a long way towards someone's performance review aka raises as well . . . . .just sayin :-) :x

  • I think any thing would be sweet. My MIL is a home care LPN and she always has a smile on her face after someone has done something to let them know they appreciate her care, even if it's just giving her a hug before she leaves their house.

  • I was there for four days... I saw every nurse a lot. One nurse, a twin mom was ahhhhhmazing. I kept thinking all the great things we would do for her once we came back. However we never got around to it. I think about her often and thank her for helping us become parents during those four days. A few months later a 'rate your delivery/stay', I called dH and we wrote up one hell of a review. Names and all. It made me fell good that we did something.

I really wanted to give her cookies though. :( I think if you're considering doing something nice, pack it IN your hospital bag, once you leave it's a whole new world and just 'getting back to the hospital' isn't that easy.
