Gifting your boss?

My husband has been with his company for a little over 6 months and I thought it was pretty normal to take something small, like homemade cookies or some homemade fudge, in to your boss and immediate supervisors (my parents always did). I started to look it up and found that a lot of people think your kissing *ss. Personally, I thought it was just a nice gesture.

Re: Gifting your boss?

  • I grew up the same way as you @h0peinasmile

My parents always brought some sweets/treats to their boss around the holidays. It's unfortunate that people view it as sucking up. I think this year I will probably bake some goodies but I will be sharing them with my team/colleagues (and my boss). I think it might be a bit too much though if you were to special order a huge tray of desserts. But a batch of fudge or cookies seems sweet and kind.

When I was in elementary school, I remember bringing dessert to my teacher -- that was all my mom's doing though too. But it just seemed normal to give a small gift to the people that are in your life every day, no?

  • Thanks! I agree that it is unfortunate that these acts of kindness are being looked at as sucking up. My husband is a merchandiser (drives around all day, going store to store) so he does not work with all of this colleagues daily. Is it acceptable to only gift his boss and immediate supervisors?

I think you should do whatever makes you/him feel comfortable. Your budget will also come into play here too... so do whatever is best for you!

  • If I was going to get something for my boss, I would get something for my coworkers as well.  If you were going to make cookies or something, I would just put them out in the break room or whatever.

  • I think bringing in some home made treats or a box of chocolates is a really nice thing to do, but buying a gift specific for your boss does look a bit bad.  I used to buy over the top expensive gifts for my boss and I found out the whole office thought we were having an affair...so I've since stopped!

  • Just to vent, my peer and I decided NOT to get the boss anything for xmas. Low and behold, one of the girls on my team decided to go behind our backs and give our boss a gift from herself. Now, we all look like major degenerates.
Ive actually always been told not to gift up. You make less money than the boss. You dont need to buy him/her anything
  • I think a personal gesture is perfect!

  • For me, it entirely depends on the work relationship/situation.  I typically will give gifts to the coworkers I either work most closely with and/or have a social relationship with.  Sometimes my parameters have included the boss and sometimes they haven't.  I have also been the boss and made it a point to give all the employees I supervised a small Xmas gift.
