Physical before TTC?

Did anyone set up a dr's appt to get checked out before TTC? I don't currently have a gyn, as my primary usually does my pap smears. I am thinking I should find one and set up appts w/ both beforehand. What kind of tests did they run? Did they do blood work? Did they check for vitamin deficiencies? What questions did you ask? Thanks in advance.

I think the general consensus is to just jump in the deep end and start trying. If after 6 months to a year (depending on age -- a year for younger ladies, 6 months for those starting later in life), you still haven't conceived, then it's time to look into testing and having discussions with the doctor.

When starting TTC, there isn't much a doctor would do other than say start taking prenatals (if not already) and have lots of sex.

  • I had an appointment with my obgyn per his request. He asked that when I decided we were ready to TTC we set up a time to see him. He gave us some freebie prenatals, ran some bloodwork to test for possible genital birth defects we could pass on, and just said to have fun and call if I went 60 days or more without a positive or period. Oh, and obviously to call if we got a BFP. It's up to you if you want a preTTC appointment really. Not necessary, but DH and I appreciated our pre appointment.

  • I don't think it's a bad idea to go ahead and get established with an OBGYN. You want to find one who you are comfortable with, and that can take a while.
They may or may not go ahead and do some basic tests, I think mine checked for vitamin D levels and my thyroid levels.
You should probably go ahead and start taking a prenatal vitamin, as most women of childbearing age should be on one anyways. There's lots of good vitamins in it whether TTC or not.
Good luck! Basically you need to do whatever you're comfortable with ultimately.
  • I set up an appointment before hand. She basically just told me to start taking prenatals and explained what to do when I got pregnant.
