It's that time of year...

...to discuss New Year's resolutions.

Haha.

MM or other...what are yours (if you are doing one)?

I called my local gym today and for the first time ever in my life, I have a gym membership (I had an amazing coupon that came the other day). I have had 3 kids in 3 1/2 years. I love my body, but I think I need to get to a healthier weight just for a good future. I have no medical issues now, but I'd like to prevent any from popping up (hopefully). Anyway, I have tossed this idea around for months, so it technically isn't a resolution - the coupon just happened to arrive when "I needed it."

Re: It's that time of year...

  • Mine is to try and eat healthier. I am not overweight but I like my snacks lol
  • Oh man, I have like 10 this year

    1) Keep up with my budgeting on excel

    2) Keep up with my couponing, etc. to cut some fat from my budget.  Tangential to this is to have our downpayment ready to go by Dec. 2013 so that we can start looking at houses seriously.

    3) Pre-pay H's law school loans by $10,000.  I'm basically using my raise to do this.

    4) Make use of the very nice gym I pay for through rent to actually exercise at least 3x per week.

    5) Put away any laundry or dishes I have out each morning and make the bed - those three things generally mean that my apartment is neat.  When I drop the ball on any of them then it becomes a disaster zone.

    6) Keep up with my billable time each week so that I don't lose time simply because I've forgotten what I've done.

    7) Keep up with scanning my personal financial files - credit card statements, etc. - so that I don't have to be buried in paper all the time.

And then I have a few tasks I want to accomplish that are sort of like resolutions:

    8) Get a safety deposit box from the bank

    9) Catalogue the books that H and I have.  He is moving into our apartment for good in May, and we already don't have nearly enough bookshelf space for my books, let alone his.  We want to consolidate our books, get rid of duplicates, and download as many as we can onto our kindles for free.  We will sell the ones we're getting rid of at this awesome used bookstore which will give us a pretty good price.

    10) When H is moving in, go through all the "stuff" in our apartment and try to downsize a bit.  We did a huge purge last year right after we got married so all our wedding gifts would fit, but I think it's good to do at least once a year.

Ok, here they are (I'm committing!)

MM: Pay off H's car and my PLUS loan ($13,000 total at 6.9% and 9%, respectively). Snowball these payments into down payment fund once complete. Fix beneficiaries on all accounts, and raise retirement contribution from 5% to 10% for both of us.

Professional: Write a grant and get it funded. Goof off on phone on official breaks only.

Personal: Get back to size 8-10, my healthiest weight (I'm a 12-14 currently, and fine with how I look but just don't feel healthy). Run 5 miles without it being a huge drama. Fix messed up sleep schedule (no falling asleep on the couch watching TV!)

Okay I have a lot resolutions/goals for this year. All of these goals are realistic they will just take discipline. It is a huge year for us and I am crazy excited to get started.

    Personal:
End everyday telling H a reason I love him
Start walking again! I would love to walk 5 miles a day 3X a week. I used to walk everyday before our move. I am happy with how I look but it couldn't hurt to lose a few pounds.
    Read 25 books.
Stick to all of the goals on the list so we can start TTC December 1st!

    Professional:
Keep this job! I have worked five jobs in 7 months and I am sick of it. I don't love my PT job but the pay is decent and I get great vacations. I need to stay put.

    Financial:
    $6,750 into savings
$4,918 to pay off two more SL
Save $1,500 for our Christmas in Florida next year
Save $700 for H to buy a golf membership for summer 2015.
---This is about $13,250 to save in 12 months. We saved more than that in 6 months last year so hopefully we will be able to knock another SL off this year as well.

  • I decided not to do new year's resolutions since they always fall flat by January 31st. I have come up with a few goals in mind and I'm hoping to stick to them. I'm pretty much doing them, not only for my myself, but for my family too:

Eat healthier, be healthier, become more active. I want to start walking daily, which I hope will turn into running. I am also going to start eating healthier and buying less and less junk. I do not need to lose any weight, but I feel sluggish all the time.

Start living off of DH's paychecks alone. I want to use my paychecks to pay off the last remaining debt that I have (should take about 3.5 months) and start saving up for our DP on land. I would like to purchase the land by Dec 2014 and start building in the spring of 2015. I'm still looking at the details for home building, but it looks like we will be building over buying.

Continue TTC and save up for the essentials for baby. I know what I will need this time around compared to what I thought I need. I also have a few big items from DD that we will be using for Baby #2.

Use our tax refund to put towards DH's car. *I* would like to have a minimal car payment with a 3 year loan, but with the payment to be less than $300 a month. DH has a picky issue when it comes to cars so we will see.

Keep my grade point average on a better side with all the running around I will have to do once school starts.

Just be a better person overall.

I don't do resolutions, but set goals.  I started going to a yoga studio back in April and loved it so much I canceled my gym membership because I wasn't getting anything out of it.  To loose all the baby weight (76lb gain :( ) I was in the gym all.the.time. with cardio and weights.  went from a size 14 when pregnant and got back down to my original size 4.  After we have kid #2 I will only do cardio and yoga.  I love the way yoga has sculpted my body and highly recommend it to anyone.  In 2014 I want to continue practicing yoga.  I also want to fulfill our efund and start contributing to retirement again.

I am not interested in yoga, but have you tried pilates? Any results from that? Thoughts?
  • I've done pilates at home and at the gym and also enjoyed that, but I didn't do it when I was loosing the baby weight.  I'm pretty sure it's a form of cardio which is good.  As long as you are eating right and staying active you will see results.

  • For us, it comes down to the idea of simplifying life. We're still trying to figure out exactly what that means, but it involves:

    1. purchasing less stupid, unnecessary stuff. I'm a sucker for a good deal, but I'm trying to embrace the 100% savings mantra.

    2. Reducing clutter. Donate/dump the current unnecessary stuff, as the upkeep of this lifestyle is too expensive mental real estate.

    3. Eating less processed, junky food. We're considering signing up for Fresh 20 to help us with this

We are also saving for a DP for a house. We currently have 32,500 in savings, but we are about to spend 2400 for summer camp for DS (he has special needs, and we feel he really *needs* this camp). I would love to close out 2014 with 52,000 if we don't buy a house this year.
