Vacation Recs with a toddler

DH and I decided we need to plan a vacation for us and our son.  It would be at the end of spring/early summer around when we are trying for #2.  We are early in the planning process but does anyone have any suggestions for kid friendly vacations? We do not want to do Disney (we have family down there and we don't want any family joining in this vacation) or the shore.  We are open to flying.  We don't want this to be over the top expensive but since it will be our big vacation we are expecting to spend some money. DS will be approximately 2 when we go.

Alternatively, we could be convinced to do a long weekend somewhere and then another vacation at the shore this weekend... although I'm not a big fan of the shore so I'd prefer a bigger vacation now.

Any ideas??

  • I actually said Cali to DH... would he be too young for legoland at 2 though? I definitely want to check out Disneyland.

We also plan on having another kid in the next few years so I'm debating if I want to save those bigger trips for when we have two kids. I'd feel bad if the other kid never got to see it haha I'm so weird like that. Worrying about my hypothetical child's feelings!

  • Maybe I'm lame, but I wouldn't travel anywhere terribly expensive or really cool with a toddler who likely wouldn't even remember the experience.  We did a long weekend down the shore this past summer when the kid was almost 2.  We may as well have taken him to the fanciest place on earth.  He had the best time at the beach and on the boardwalk.

I just think that there are so many amazing places in this area to do day trips (ie zoo, PTM, aquarium, etc) that an over the top vacation at this age doesn't make sense.  Different strokes for different folks and all that, but this is my take.

  • Jessica I get what you are saying.... I am trying to find something that is exciting for us too and will entertain him.  That's the reason we want to go somewhere new.  I don't want to spend a fortune but since it will be our only vacation for the year I want it to be something we can look forward to! I keep thinking Maine.  I went up there as a kid and loved it.  I'm not sure what DS would do other than if we go to the beach and stuff though.

  • San Diego has one of the best zoos in the country too. I understand both sides, you need a break from your life, a vacation, but need something that is engaging for your LO. My friend did a trip to PR when her son was this age and they all had a great time.

  • Are you anti-beach or just over the Jersey shore?  We took Hunter to OBX a couple years ago and it was insanely cheap.  We actually rented a big house and a bunch of couples with kids went with us.  It was only about $300 a person for the house and each couple took a night to cook, so we weren't spending a ton of money on going out to eat.

Bonus.. most houses have pools, so if you aren't a beach person, there is still away to float in the water.

  • @Amerbutts81 Just over the Jersey shore and know that if we go my in laws will join us

I love OBX actually. I think we want it to just be us three but if we go in the off season/right before the season maybe we could get a cheap house... hmmmmm I didn't even think of that!

  • Im late to the post but what about a cruise? There are tons of cruises of all different length and location that leave from the mid atlantic area so you would only have to drive a short distance to hop on board (no airfare!). A lot of cruise ships and cruise stops are family friendly (you'd need to do some research to figure out the best option there) and actually pretty cheap considering everything thats included.

  • Dh is scared of cruises after there have been so many issues lately. We discussed one right before the big carnival cruise mess (I think that's who it was) so he won't do it now. Maybe in a few years when we can go with Mickey haha

  • I lied... we are doing rehoboth.  We looking into OBX and all of the houses we liked were sunday rentals which is too much of a pain with work.  The place we rented last summer with my mom is available the week we want it and had a pool and was great. So I think we are doing that!
