Dairy Intolerance?

If you are breast feeding/breast fed, how did you come to the realization that your LO had a dairy intolerance? W has had a ridiculous amount of gas, isn't sleeping that great lately and has had ridiculous poos. I'm not sure if I should call his dr or if I should just cut dairy out and see if that resolves things. Please share your experiences. TIA!

Re: Dairy Intolerance?

  • That happened to two friends of mine but both of those ladies' babies ended up having pretty bad symptoms. I think blood in the stool was the big one. Good luck.

  • DS had wicked colic starting around 4w and by 8w I was willing to try anything. My midwife suggested cutting dairy and it took about 2 weeks for it to leave my system an it was like turning off the lightswitch on colic. The diarreha also ended. And if I tried to introduce it back he would have a really awful day or two as a result. He had no problem with dairy after the 1yr mark.

Background- I have an intolernace to dairy. After talking to my naturopath, we determined that DS probably is fine with dairy but was reacting to the inflammation dairy caused in my system.

It's worth cutting it for a month and see if it makes a difference. It was my lifesaver for him.

  • The biggest thing we noticed with G was blood in his stool.  His stools were also green, loose, full of mucus, and he was going 6-8 times per day.  Cutting dairy made a difference, but I also had to cut soy and wheat.  Once I cut out wheat (that was the last thing I did) his poos normalized within 2 days.  I'd say cut it out and see what happens.  The pedi said lots of babies with milk protein allergies are also sensitive to soy, so you might want to consider cutting that out, too.  That's a tough one, though.  Lots of label reading involved.

  • my sister had an issue with my nephew and she ended up cutting out dairy and glutens and he was almost immediately doing better.

and he is totally fine at 2 now and doesnt have any food allergies

  • I tried cutting dairy for a while to see if it would help with how gassy he was, but it didn't seem to have an effect. It turned out that it was due to oversupply and a forceful let down. It basically caused him to swallow too much air when he was nursing. His symptoms seemed worse at night for whatever reason.
