Car recs

I need a new car... DH has a newer car (2010 Ford Explorer) that is way too expensive for what it is... and gets crappy gas mileage. We are trying to cut back on our expenses before we start trying for #2 and this is one area of the budget that is way too high... especially when you add on a new car for me.

So we both need new cars.  We do not need anything fancy but here is what we would want/like...

DH
4x4/AWD, room for 2 carseats (eventually) and a dog in the back... plus some cargo room for when we travel to see my family for the weekend or go on vacation.  We would like it to get over 22mpg combined (if we get that we get his gas reimbursed by work) he would also like sirius radio... but if we can't find it I will just get him an external radio again

me
AWD, room for two carseats, best gas mileage I can find (i drive a lot for work) I would like navigation because of driving for work but not a necessity. I have a gps and can get a new one since mine stinks.

Ideally I'd like to get the two cars at the same place to try to gain some bargaining power but that is not a necessity.  We are ok with pre-owned but want warranties on them even if we have to pay for it through the dealer.

Any cars you would recommend?

  • Subaru XV Cross Trek.

    Averages 30mpg.
We will be getting one in the next few months.
  • erbur I actually looked at that! my paralegal has one and loves it.  I think the new one will be a hybrid too.  I'd love that but I don't think we can afford two new cars with one of them being brand new :-(

    added to the list!

  • I love Main Line Honda. Its where I bought my last two cars. They were easy to negotiate and I looked at every Honda dealer in a 20 mile radius and they were by far the nicest with the best prices.

You can get the mini van and your husband can get the accord or pilot ;)

  • My husband and I both worked at ML Honda years ago. It's where we actually met, so I have a soft spot for the place. My husband actually runs Scott Select in West Chester, which is next door to Scott Honda. The Select side is no haggle newer- used cars, similar to Car Max, but they have access to brand new and certified Hondas. If you want my husband's info, let me know. Personally, I'm on my 2nd Toyota Rav4 AWD I and love it. It's a smaller SUV, but I still manage to squeeze 3 car seats in the back. The trunk is a good size, too. It handles well in the snow, which is important to me since I'm a nervous driver. I also like the Bluetooth and navigation, and haven't had a problem with either. I went with the 4-cylinder, so the gas isn't too bad even though its an SUV.

  • I love my Toyota Highlander.  Gets great gas mileage, easily fits two car seats and has a third, fold down seat with ample storage in the back.

  • My dad has a 2012 Honda CRV and I love it. The one he has has everything but navigation ( you can play your iPhone through the radio with bluetooth so you can use your own phone navigation that way). It's plenty roomy and gets great mileage with the Econ feature.

I am quite partial to Hondas lol- they are worth every penny. I have a 94 (yes 1994) Accord with 170k on it that still runs like a dream. Our other car is a 2004 Accord which we bought used at Main Line Honda. We had a great experience there. If you keep up on your maintenance, replace your timing belt at every 90k, you'll have that car forever. The Accord is a bit small for DH but serves us fine right now with just DS.

So I vote for CR-v for you and Pilot for DH. Check out the Odyssey too.

  • my hubs has an older Subaru Legacy and loves it!  He's 6'4 and we can still fit a car seat pretty comfortably in it.

When its time to trade in my baby, Sasha the Jeep, I am thinking about a Rav 4 or a CRV.  While my Jeep is in the shop, I am driving my dad's 2003 Hylander and OMG the room in this thing!  There is a really good amount of trunk space and the back seat is really roomy, AND  I don't feel like I am driving an 18 wheeler.  It's pretty crappy on gas milage, but it's 11 years old- I am sure the newer ones are better.  I personally love Toyota's, Jeeps and Honda's because you can beat the piss out of them and they keep coming back for more.

  • Another vote for a subaru, we just became a one car family and the AWD station wagon is a dream come true.
