I thought David Sedaris was supposed to be funny

I am reading Dress your family in corduroy and denim and I couldn't be more bored. At least the chapters are short.

Same here...I was grateful his one and only book I read (Me Talk Pretty Some Day) was only like 225 pages....I think I may have given up otherwise.

I've seen him live and listened to some of his things, and I think that's why I find it funny. I think it's his delivery that makes it good.

I think David Sedaris is extremely grim. His brand of humor is not for everyone, and I have to be in a very specific mood to "get it."

I think it's something I'd have to hear. Amy Sedaris is the same. I've quit his books multiple times, even though it seems like something I'd like.

Hearing it didn't help me either. I've done two audiobooks and I just don't get it. I think I finally just had to accept that David Sedaris just isn't for me.

Same for me. I listened to Dress Your Family and still hated it.

I've listened to most of his, but I love him. He's very dry and sarcastic and it's totally my kind of thing. But I can see how he wouldn't be for everyone.

I went into this book knowing nothing about David Sedaris other than he writes memoirs and is supposed to be funny. So I was expecting to be reading something on the lines of "Let's Pretend this Never Happened". I guess my expectations were skewed. I had no idea that he is so matter of fact. Normally I have no problem with dry humor but to me this book had absolutely no humor at all.

OMG I had to put down Me Talk Pretty One Day because I was laughing out loud so hard so many times in a row. I think he's absolutely hilarious. Then I saw him live a few months ago and I was almost crying I was laughing so much.

But I totally agree, he is definitely not for everyone.

Yup, I have to be in the mood. Actually that's true for any humor book. I find them less immersive so like to read them at a time that I can only read in short, distracted spurts like a busy vacation.

This post makes me sad because I think he's hilarious but I agree with Julie and YL in that he's not for everyone. I find him hilarious though
