2014 Genre Challenge

Ok, so there's be interest in doing this again this year, and I'm totally in. Here's what we need to decide: Do we want to stick with the same genres or switch it up? Last year we had 30 genres which I think is a good, solid number. Not too many that it's overwhelming but enough to be a challenge. I'd like to stick with that number but maybe replace some? What do you think?

Here is the list from 2013:
Romance
Mystery
Sci-fi
Fantasy
Historical Fiction
Historical Non-Fiction
Memoir
Travel Writing
Zombie
Dystopian
Thriller
True Crime
Horror
Children's Lit
Classic
Literary Fiction
Humor
Short Stories
Essays
Contemporary Fiction
Fairy Tale Re-writes
Chic Lit
Western
Poetry
Urban Fantasy
Paranormal
Play
Politics/Current Events
Pop Culture/Celebrity
Graphic Novel

Re: 2014 Genre Challenge

  • I agree that 30 is a good number. I'd like to see the genres switched up. I don't see myself reading any more westerns or urban fantasy novels, ha ha. Maybe keep 15 of the broadest categories (mystery, sci fi, fantasy etc) and replace 15 of the more niche genres (zombie, fairy tale re writes etc). I really enjoyed doing it last year, it forced me to read some books I never would have picked up otherwise.

  • I agree with @sagoon. Let's definitely keep the main ones but I unfortunately can't think of any genres to replace any with as of now.

  • I like the idea of keeping the broad and switching out the niche.  Here are a few ideas:

    Women's Studies
    Science
    Psychology
    Books about books
    Medicine/Health
    Self-help
    Humor

Some more niche genre ideas: Mythology, Sports, Adventure, Environment/Nature, World War II, Autobiography, Food Writing, British Lit, Victorian Lit, Cult Classics, Time Travel, Tragedy

  • How about instead of Women's Studies, do (insert group here) Studies and leave it up to the person?  There are lots of groups to choose from and it opens it up to a lot more options.

  • So, do we have a new list?

  • How does this look?  I kept 15 of the broader 2013 categories and added 15 of the suggested niche categories (I put 'cultural studies' as the broader women's studies category).  I'm not in charge of this or anything, I just thought it would be fun to put together.

    1. Romance
    2. Mystery
    3. Sci-fi
    4. Fantasy
    5. Historical Fiction
    6. Historical non-fiction
    7. Memoir
    8. Travel Writing
    9. Thriller
    10. True Crime
    11. Classic
    12. Literary Fiction
    13. Humor
    14. Contemporary Fiction
    15. Play
    16. British Lit
    17. Science
    18. Food Writing
    19. Medicine/Health
    20. Mythology
    21. Adventure
    22. Music/Film

  • Sounds awesome.

The play category is one that held me back last time, so I see that it's going to keep coming after me until I just do it ;)

  • Jacki, try Romeo and Juliet. It's not that long.

I remember having to read it in 9th grade, if I could stomach it then, you can do it now. :)

Just think, you're reading it for fun, you don't have to dissect it and write a paper.

Shakespeare also made me realize WHY I liked watching it more than reading it.

@jackiback (or anyone else) if you're not a play person, here are my recommendations.  I was a theater major for quite a bit and these were my favorites.
How I Learned to Drive - Paula Vogel
Summer and Smoke or The Glass Menagerie- Tennessee Williams
Death of a Salesman - Arthur Miller
The Miracle Worker - William Gibson (this is about Helen Keller if you're interested)
My favorite Shakespeare works are The Taming of the Shrew and Othello with Hamlet as a close third..

I haven't read it but it will be my choice: August: Osage County by Tracy Letts.  I'm interested in the movie so I'd like to see how it started

ETA: Also this list looks awesome!! I added a couple more for myself that I didn't get to last year.
