  • Boo being back to work.  I so wish it were Friday.

My whine is that my boss gave all of us the option to come in today, because it's -20 and roads are closed due to drifts.  Being a salaried employee, I told him that I would just work from home.  His response was, "have to be at an office to get paid."  Um, I get paid whether I'm at the office or not.

Hmmm I'm not sure if that's an option, I've never ordered delivery for just myself. Now I have to think if I'm in the mood for a pizza place kind of lunch! These terribly tough life decisions are too much for me on a Monday!

I'm the first one they've hired and made salary. So I honestly don't think they understand it fully.  I also receive vacation days each year too, but with a salaried position vacation time shouldn't be a factor.  It's definitely confusing, but I won't complain about getting paid for all the times I leave early for Dr's appointments and not having to make up the hours.

Why wouldn't vacation time be a factor with a salaried position?  I negotiated more weeks than standard when I started this job.

I've always heard with a salaried position you don't get designated vacation time, because you get paid no matter what.

Obviously I don't know enough about it to argue with my bosses on it, and I've been salary for 5 years now.

  • @seahorse01 Do you also get sick time or anything with yours?

One thing I find frustrating is that I will take a half day here or there for Dr's appointments, and I don't want it to be taken away from my vacation time.
My bosses both consider it a wash when I take random times away from the office, because in an average week I work 2.5-3 extra hours. So they don't take it away from my vacation time unless I take a whole day off.  They consider us "even" at the end of each year.

  • We do get sick time, though I don't know how much we get. The rule here is you have to be at work for 10 minutes and if you get sick and leave at any point after that 10 minutes then you don't have to record sick time.  I do work for a Fortune 100 company though.

At my level I don't really have to report anything, but I try to true up the vacation hours I take so it doesn't throw up any flags with payroll.  I have 240 hours accrued right now because they roll it over and I've been here 9 years.

We did have a designated amount of vacation time when I was salaried at Sprint as well.

  • Salaried positions have designated sick and vacation time in most cases so that they can be sure employees are at work enough days to really "earn" their salaries. Yes, you get paid your salary whether you're there or you're on vacation, but you have to claim those vacation days as the reason you weren't at work in order to actually get paid. That way, people aren't just taking days off and never giving a reason for it.

I get 3 weeks vacation time and something like 5 days for sick time each year. They're accrued, and my sick time can roll over each year indefinitely, but I hit a limit on the amount of vacation time earned, so if I don't take a day or two every now and then, I'd basically stop earning it and just sit at my limit until I took some.

There are other reasons I can give for being out of work on a particular day (jury duty, bereavement, unpaid leave [I guess if you have no accrued time to take and must be out of work], etc), but if I'm not here, I have to provide a reason on my timesheet and deduct the appropriate amount of time from my sick/vacation accruals. Yes, I'm salaried, but I still need to complete a timesheet for each month, just indicating any days I was out and designating them as to why.

Me too.  I have to submit a timesheet every week.  I don't mind putting in requests for vacations, etc. and tracking days I'm off, but I think it's ridiculous that they make me "prove" I'm here 40 hours a week.  So if I come in late one morning or leave early because I'm done with my work I feel obligated to make up that time even though I'm salaried because the hours are right in front of my boss's face.

  • I'm salaried and we have to submit vacation and sick leave and all other leave through our automated system, but I don't have to track my time on a daily basis.  If we need to leave early or go to an appointment, we do have to put it through the system.  For the most part, our manager is responsible for babysitting us and our hours, so some are really watchful and most are pretty trusting.

  • My whine is that my Dh finished the brownies and the cookies that we bought from the bakery this weekend.  I got home from the gym and wanted something sweet so bad (ironic, I know) but noooo Dh had to eat them all or take them all in his lunch.
