working out while pregnant

this is an XP from the facebook board.

last night I had a terrible workout and i'm really worried this is an indication of what the second half of my pregnancy is going to be like. did any of you girls workout through your pregnancy? and when did you realize that you needed to scale it back?

so far i've continued doing everything I was doing pre pregnancy and haven't had any problems, but I know i'll have to quit the situps soon...not sure about burpees and so forth. I plan on asking the doctor tomorrow.

Re: working out while pregnant

  • My doctor told me to wear a heart rate monitor, and that really helped. I did spinning and yoga throughout...but no heavy lifting for me. Listen to your body. I'd think you would be able to continue doing workouts you have done pre-pregnancy, but maybe just adjusted for carrying a LO.

  • My doc said that needing a heart rate monitor is an old way of thinking, they are no longer worried about an elevated heart rate during work outs. I was told to skip the lifting and Pilates but everything else was okay... Then I got put on light duty and just stopped. I walk 3-4 times a week, clean my house and garden. That's the extent on my workouts now :(

  • I am a registered kinesiologist and I would encourage you to sub your situps for planks.  It will strengthen your back to support your belly as it grows, as well as strengthening your pelvic floor which will help later on in pregnancy, delivery and post-partum.

Personally I couldn't do a proper situp once I popped, but I continued to do planks, spin, yoga, swimming, weightlifting and walking until I was put on bedrest at 33 weeks.  It really is so great to get your heart pumping and stay strong while pregnant, but I think you'll find burpees to be more difficult.  You are safe to continue, but allow yourself to slow down and maintain proper form in whatever you are doing. As the pp said, listen to your body.

  • thanks girls! so far my doctor hasn't given me any restrictions I just feel myself slowing down.

and @lindsayandjamie thank you for those suggestions! I was having a hard time with pushups last night and was planking instead, so it looks like I'll just be subbing in even more planks!

  • Not to thread-jack, but do you think I can do planks while on the "no workout" restriction? I mean, it's just static. Nothing that could possibly jostle my ovaries and cause torsion.

Not that I can hold one for very long at this point, but doing a few shorter planks would be better than continuing to sit on my ass!

  • I worked out through 31 weeks during my pregnancy.  I did everything I normally did but just modified it as I got bigger.

Obviously I'm not your doc, but I would say you are safe.  I imagine your doctor gave you that restriction based on your history so that you know that you are doing everything possible in your power to sustain this pregnancy.  I would suspect it is more about 'stressing' your system.  If I were in your shoes, I would feel comfortable planking.  Just remember to breath through them :)

@LuckyAngel07 I don't know but i'm headed to the doctor tomorrow so I can ask them for you if you'd like!

they may not want you contracting your muscles at all. and you definetly pull in your core while doing a plank.

Tomorrow is a big day for GPM, what with Ashley having her baby, you having your a/s, and me having my appt to see if things in there are thriving. There will be lots of updates!

Thanks for the offer to ask, but since I'll be going to see her tomorrow, I might as well just ask then (if I remember :P)
