Prenatal Vitamins

Hello all. First time posting on this particular Nest thread. I figured this would be an okay question to ask.

While DH and I technically aren't TTC right now (we agreed we'd actively start trying once we found a nicer place to live than our little barely room for the two of us rental), I did do the smart thing and ask my doctor what steps I should take to prepare for that. One of the things she mentioned was prenatal vitamins for a few months before hand. Easy enough right?

I may have overwhelmed myself looking through the vitamin section at the store the other night since there were tons of different products and dosages. :-(

So nesties, any particular brands that you love/steer clear from? Thanks!!

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • Hello!  I used the Target brand and they were fine (and cheap).  Some people here have experienced stomach/digestive sensitivities, others are fine.

I would pick up something cheap and try that first.

  • I like my gummy prenatals that have DHA and folic acid.  I believe they are CVS brand.  The regular pills make me feel queasy, but not the gummies.

  • I take Nature Made's Prenatal Multi w/ DHA. It's a large pill, but it goes down fairly easily for me (it's got a smooth coated exterior). It doesn't upset my stomach AT ALL, which I've experienced with other multis if I don't take them with a full meal. It also ensures I get the requisite DHA without having to take a second (possibly fishy-smelling) pill.

  • I use Nature's Bounty Your Life with DHA and folic acid.  I originally tried them because they were buy one get one free at Stop and Shop (can't beat a 4 month supply for $15, right?) and I haven't had any issues, even if I take them on an empty stomach, which I can't do with others.  I had my OB take a look and he said they were perfectly fine.

  • These are the ones I have taken.

They're very gentle on your stomach, and I haven't had any issues with it flaring up my acid reflux like others did.

  • I have taken Nature Made with DHA, and also just the grocery store brand. Neither upset my stomach and when I'm out, I just buy whatever brand is on sale. I've compared the ingredients and most brands are pretty similar.

  • Holy responses! Thank you everyone for your input! :-)
I think I may lean towards the gummies just because I have had instances using normal tablet vitamins where I have gotten sick soon after and I don't really see this side effect as much when I was taking regular gummy vitamins. I think I did see a few brands that had the DHA included so that will be something to look for. Thank you everyone!!

  • I've been taking the Nature Made Prenatal Multi for about a month. Very small, reasonably priced, and no issues at all.

I would like to take one with DHA, but being a strict vegetarian, I haven't been able to find one sans fish oil that isn't super $$$$. Any suggestions?!

Do you know about the Deva products? All vegan and very reasonably priced. Here's a link to their website for more info (but I usually purchase on Amazon): http://www.devanutrition.com  Hope that helps!

  • Yay! I was wondering this very same question myself. My mother suggested I start taking prenatals and bought me folic acid. Wasn't sure what else to take. I had no idea they made prenatals in gummies.
  • Great question and thanks for all of the answers! I am at the same stage and love to hear different perspectives before I start on this TTC journey.
  • I just want to say, I started out on gummies because I read so many suggestions about them. Little did I know, I didn't want sweets at all and I HATED to even think about having to eat one. Finally, I got some pills to swallow.

You may not want them after you are pregnant so it might be a good idea to get a pill form, too.

  • I take the Target brand along with a separate DHA pill...the DHA is important too so you want to make sure you either get a prenatal that already has that in it, or you can buy those as a separate pill.
