I talked about this in the Whine/Win post, but I just sent out the email to my boss about working from home until the baby comes, starting next week.

On Sunday, I'll be 39 weeks and my work is 45 minutes away from the hospital. And since I've been having contractions, I would like to be as close to that hospital as possible when the time comes (I live 250 YARDS from the hospital).

I know the worst they can say is no, but I'm still nervous. I don't want them to think I'm a slacker. I just want to be able to be comfortable for the the last week (or two weeks if baby is stubborn).

Good vibes and thoughts, please!

*****UPDATE*****

I heard back from my boss. He says that understands my "desire" to be close to the hospital, however, because of the nature of my position I am expected to be on premise.

The only reason I am required to come to the office is to be a face at a desk. Everything about the marketing part of job can be done from home. As for the administrative, they have the ability to set up a fwd for me to answer phones from home and mail is delivered directly to the office.

He said he would talk to the CEO about it if I really wanted to press it.

  • Good luck! I hope they say yes; it makes so much sense! But from what you've said about them, it doesn't seem like they care too much what makes more sense for you.

  • Yeah, if your job is doable from home then I'd say they're assholes if they say no. But as pandpmeant2be said, they don't exactly sound like they're playing a fair game anymore.

  • GL!  I worked from home for a week once I went overdue with Delilah and was so much more comfortable.  I used my ball as a seat and just bounced all day while working - haha.  Plus I got to wear pjs.  FX your work will let you do the same.

  • What a bunch of asshats. All that secondary stuff just means no, but with more irritation on your end for continuing to try. I say go in late, leave early, and do jack while you're there. If anyone asks, you're having contractions and very uncomfortable being at a desk :-p

I'm sorry. It sucks. I just found a new job when I was on mat leave bc I couldn't bear to leave my kid for 8 hours for people who didnt value my work.

  • @DangerMuffin23 - "asshats" is the perfect word to describe them. DH told me he hopes my water breaks on their carpet. Lol. The only other girl they had on maternity leave in the past 5 years worked from home for the last month of her pregnancy, all I'm asking for is a week - possibly two. They are just being asshats.

@blueeyedblossom - I've asked two separate doctors for a note. Both said unless I'm having major complications, there's no reason I can't go into work - travel restrictions be damned. I'm feeling extremely trapped. If we could afford for me to just quit, I would.

It's physically painful to be in the office. This kid needs to come.

  • What a bunch of assholes!  I agree with @DangerMuffin23.  Get to work later than usual, leave a bit early because you're uncomfortable and don't do anything while you're there.

I also agree with your DH.  I know it would be awkward for you, but I hope your water breaks all over the office so they have to clean it up.

I'm so sorry they're such a bunch of jerks.  :(

  • @madeline10L - I probably wouldn't mind it as much if I wasn't in constant pain and getting contractions. My office requires me to be on me feet a lot (because people whine and complain about having to come get their mail/packages/anything they print out or fax at the front desk).

My OB office more than likely won't let me go past my due date (if they do. It won't be long). All I'm asking for is 5 days.
    Dave and Kathleen - 09.12.09:

  • I'm sorry they are being jerks. I would cry at the OB's office until they gave me the note. Full on waterworks.

I think this is my last resort on Tuesday. I still have a cold too so it'll be snotty like a little kid haha

I've had SPD since late in the second tri and literally just can't take it anymore. At least at home, I have my exercise ball I can sit on or the ability to lie down while I work instead of being hunched in a hard chair and walking on concrete covered by thin carpet lol

  • this whole thing is bull! I think you should tell your boss you would like him to talk to the CEO and then make sure the CEO is aware that someone else was able to work from home toward the end of their pregnancy.
  • I'm sorry :( ***Hugs***

  • This is such crap. I would be bringing the exercise ball in and sitting on it while working.

Do your coworkers see and understand the crap they're putting you through?  If so, then maybe let them know how uncomfortable you've been this past week and ask that they help out some.

  • I totally hear you on the spd. Miserable. I started leave at 36 weeks and can't imagine having worked any longer than that.

I would definitely push the issue. It's only one week for them and it's dangerous/impractical for you to be driving that far from home this close to your due date.

Your boss really is an ass...
