resignation letter

Does anyone have any experience with these?

My mom is getting a new job, and her current boss told her she needs to send in a resignation letter.  She works part time in a high school cafeteria - really?

My mom absolutely HATES her boss.

She wants to address some of the issues she's had in the letter - but is that where those should be addressed?  Personally, I don't think that should be addressed in the letter.. .  What do you guys think?

There are many more important job related issues.. but here's an example, just so you guys can see what she has to deal with:

My mom wasn't able to make it to the high school christmas party (for all hs employees).  They have drawings, and you do not need to be present to win.  The next day, one of the deans came up to my mom and said "Hey, you were a big winner yesterday, what did you get?"  She said, "I was?"  So she went in to her boss's office and said, "Hey, I heard I won something at the party yesterday?"  Her boss, who didn't even make eye contact with her, said "I'll give it to you tomorrow."

The next day, at the end of the day she went back in there, nicely, saying "So what did I win?"  Her boss said, "Oh.. you won a few poinsettias that I was using to decorate the lines, just take one."  My mom said, "Well, I thought it was a gift card?"  Her boss said, "Oh yeah, I donated it to the family we sponsored."

Excuse me?  Now, it's not like my mom needed to have the gift - it was just the principal of the way her boss reacted.  You know she kept it for herself.  For whatever reason, she has it out for my mom.   And my mom is one the most loyal, nicest, selfless person I know.  I just feel bad that she her boss makes her feel like crap at work.

But - she found a full time supervisor position for a company that she was also working part time for, which she is super excited about!

Okay, sorry for the novel.

Re: resignation letter

  • Will she have an exit interview with anybody? An HR department? Considering it's a school, I don't know how that works.
If she writes the letter and gives it to her boss (the jerk), will he be the only one to see it, or is there a more formal group it goes through?
I guess what I'm saying here is, I have a lot of questions, too. :)

  • I don't think there is really a point to address the issues in the letter. Her boss is probably just asking for it as a formality and so they have it in writing that she is resigning. My husband switched jobs recently and was asked for one. It said little more other than "I have accepted a new position and will be leaving my current position as of this date" The letter is most likely going to be placed in a personnel file and never looked at again.

  • A resignation letter should be pretty simple and direct - Please accept this letter as my official resignation. My last day will be <date>. etc. (Lots of good samples online.)

If they do exit interviews, that would be the time to air any grievances. If she isn't asked to do one, she can inquire about it. Or she can write a letter and give it to her boss' boss.

Exactly every last word of this.

Even if she gets an exit interview I would still submit a formal (written) complaint to her boss' boss.
  • I don't have anything else to add to what's above. I think that's some good advice. But congrats to your mom on getting out of a crummy job and into a better one! :)

I agree with all of this.  Resignation letter should be simple and to the point.  If she doesn't have an exit interview (and even if she does), I would still write a formal letter to her boss's boss, just so he/she knows.  Becuase most likely, if she has an exit interview, it'd be done by her boss..

  • Thanks ladies!  Yeah, I agree that it should be simple and to the point - just for them to have something on file.

I did talk to her this morning, and told her she probably shouldn't bring up anything regarding her boss.  It's too late now - she's leaving.  Maybe if she was unhappy and staying there she could do something about it, but no sense in stirring up drama now.

As far as I know, there is no exit interview.  And because of this snow storm, most of her two week notice is consisting of snow days!
