Got my blood results

My doctor called with my results this afternoon. My thyroid was low and TSH levels are a little high. I am a little surprised since I get a physical every year and I've never had abnormal thyroid results. I have an appointment with an endocrinologist on the 22nd. Not what I was expecting, but another step in the process. I'm going to start researching this, but what does this mean? Any info you can give me?

Do you mean that your thyroid function is low? A high TSH indicates an underactive thyroid. It can be indicative of hypothyroidism. Thyroid issues are no joke (I have my TSH checked frequently as Grave's Disease runs in my family as does hypothyroidism). I don't mean to scare you, but I'm glad you have an upcoming appointment. I hope you get some solid answers at your appointment with the endo.

ETA: the thyroid controls a lot of the hormone levels in the body. When your levels are off, you can feel tired, irritable, and not quite yourself.

  • I have Hasimoto's hypothyroidism. My levels run high when I'm not on meds. When my levels are off, my cycles are really long. And I feel really crappy.
Hopefully you'll have a good endocrinologist, and everything will get back to normal. You'll be on thyroid meds the rest of your life. I see my endo every 3 months, and once I get "normal" I will go to 6 months and then once a year I believe.
He told me that it is very important to call him when I get my BFP because meds will have to be adjusted.
  • No advice but hopefuly your endo is great and can get those levels under control quickly!

  • @poppies717 and @blueeyedblossom yes. They said my thyroid function was a little low. I'm surprised because I have normal periods and feel just fine. I've been a little more tired, but I've always though that I am one of those people that need a little more sleep (I still sleep "normal" hours but need 7-8 a night.) I also get physicals every year and have never had abnormal thyroid levels. I also had it specifically tested 2 years ago because I was having some other issues. Thanks for the info!

  • Luckily it's a fairly easy fix and not really too serious most times.
  • I'm sorry you got some less than stellar results, but it's great you've got a follow-up scheduled already. Hopefully, they get you all sorted out quickly and it's NBD.

That's the crap thing about thyroid issues. They can show up pretty suddenly. I am so thankful they found your levels were off as quickly as they did. I hope the endo has you feeling more like yourself soon! ((hugs))

I have also been tested multiple times over the pas 10-15 years, with 'normal' results. My lastest dr says that the 'normal' range is based on a 25 yr old male, and is/was very outdated.

That was about 5 years ago. I think they have recently updated it, maybe?

ETA: Soo, a quick google search says that the range was changed in 2002, but not all docs are aware. This might explain why your results were previously normal, but are now considered elevated.

I also have high TSH, with normal cycles. I have other symptoms, though, which are helped greatly by my levothyroxine.

  • Nothing new in the way of advice to add that hasn't been covered by PP's, but GL to you moving forward. Thankfully, thyroid medication is a pretty easy fix, if needed.

    Ovaries are done...
    DE IVF ER - 12/2/2016 (17R/10F = 8 frosties); FET 1.0 (1/27/2017) - BFP 6dp5dt (EDD 10/16/2017)
  • Doctors are more strict with "normal levels" once you are TTC a lot of women who have sub clinical hypothyroidism are treated during testing and once pregnant because it can affect the fetus. It's not an uncommon thing to have sub clinical hypothyroidism and PCOS. Super easy to fix, all the blood work sucks, though.
