The Giver movie - book spoilers

So, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how they are going to visually make this movie. No one in the community, including Jonas, can see color. But they don't KNOW they can't see color until Jonas realizes he can.

I don't think black and white at the beginning will work because then the audience realizes that there is something wrong/no color. And the fun of the book is discovering this along with Jonas. I love telling my students to go back after Jonas makes this discovery and look at how Lois Lowry uses NO colors in her description of things at all. It's all pale/dark/shade/etc. I think a B&W into color movie would totally ruin this effect.

I just think it will be so hard to capture visually and get the same emotional impact.

  • I totally agree with you and yet I see no other way for them to do this other than switching from B&W to color.

I think the audience will know something is wrong, but won't know what it is. It will still be fun to watch Jonas discover it... maybe.

  • I had the same thought. I have a feeling they will just do black and white, and I'll be disappointed.

  • I don't know either, but I have to tell you that at first glance I thought your subject line said THE GINGER, and I was instantly intrigued. :)

  • The book is also very introspective.  Not a lot of action.  I wonder what scenes they are going to add to make it more exciting to tween audiences.

  • OMG I just had a terrible terrible thought.

Taylor Swift is definitely going to write a song for this movie.

  • I'm hesitant to believe this book can be made into a movie and still capture some of the emotions in the book - especially the sledding scene. It carries so much weight in the book for me, I'm hoping they do it well.

  • When I first heard Meryl Streep was in this movie I honestly pictured her as Jonas's mom. I was a little surprised to see her cast as who she has been but it makes sense too. Interested to see what they do with the movie though.
