Putting off reading the end

I'm loving the book that I'm reading (Anathem by Neal Stephenson), and I'm down to less than 100 pages to go (out of 1010). Over the past few days I've found that I've been reluctant to pick it up, and I realized that it's because I don't want it to end! It's not one of those books that's action-packed, so it's not so much about finding out what happens (though I am curious). It's more that I've spent so much time in this alternate world that I'm reluctant to finish it, because I don't want to say goodbye! I'm eager to move on to something new, but I don't want this one to end!

Does this happen to anyone else?

Re: Putting off reading the end

  • This totally happens to me.  I don't know if I go to the extreme of actually feeling reluctant to continue reading, but it's definitely bittersweet sometimes looking forward to the ending to see what happens, but at the same time just not wanting it to end!

I have this on my TBR.  I'll have to pick it up soon if it's that good!

I love xenoanthropology, so this is right up my alley. I have a friend who complained that it was hard to get around the made-up vocabulary, and I can see where he's coming from, but after a hundred pages or so (and a lot of flipping back for reference), I found that I was pretty comfortable with the new vocabulary. Most of it is rooted in English or Latin, and after a while I found that if I didn't know a word, I wasn't quite sure if it was made up or not until I looked it up!

  • This happens to me all the time.  And then starting a new book is almost painful because I am so reluctant to begin imagining a whole new world.

  • Ha. I am the exact opposite. I. Must. Finish. If I m avoiding picking up a book it's because it is slow and doesn't hold my attention. I am slow to pick up another book so I can linger in that world a little longer.

This. I am agitated all day long until I can get home and read.

This is me too. Afterwards, I'm always so mad I flew through it and didn't take the time to linger and savor the words.

  • This happened to me when I was listening to UTD....I just wanted to keep hearing stories about that world!

  • The worst is when you're trying to draw out the end and savor it, and then the last 20 pages or so are an excerpt from another book.  Makes me all kinds of stabby.  It's false advertising.

  • I'm having the same problem with Bel Canto.  I have about ten pages left and I know there is no way it can end well and I know it's going to devastate me so I keep putting off finishing it.
