Ideas for toddler activities.

I mentioned in the Friday thread that I'm watching my niece tomorrow.  She'll be 4 this month and is super active.  She needs to be doing something constantly, any ideas for activities?  Everytime I watch her I feel like I'm boring her to death, so I'd like this time to have thing for her to do.

  • Are you staying in or can you go out?

If you're staying in, I'd probably get some sort of art activity.  I know my 4 yr old loves to paint, color, draw and mold things and will stay put doing that for a long time.  She also loves playing dress up.  If you have the energy, just run around the house and try to make her catch you or you catch her.

If you are going out, try to find a restaurant that has an indoor playground.  She will definitely expend some energy there.

Evans idea about baking is also good, but be prepared for a mess.  My 4 yr old also tends to get bored at the end as well.

  • I have a little paint set for her.  I either luck out and she'll sit quietly for an hour painting, or she'll make a giant mess and be over it in 10 minutes.  She really likes to play hide and seek, but being honest I get sick of that by about the third time she tells me to hide.

I like to idea of dress up and baking.  She's not very girly so that's probably why I never thought to do that before.  It's going to be in the 20s so we might go play in the snow for a little bit.  When I watched her this summer she was happy just running around my yard, but it's to cold to do that.

If all else fails there is a McD's next to my house with an indoor playground!

We always resort to indoor playground when you can't go outside and the kids are getting antsy.

Mom's on my local board love the paint dots, they said it's cleaner... What about candy land?

  • A friend on Facebook just had a thing about painting snow.  She put snow in a clear Rubbermaid container, put it in her freezer for a little to firm it up.  Then she gave her sons some paint and brushes and they painted on the snow.  It looked really neat and they are really into it in the pictures she posted.
