I think we have a name!

so my H is very serious about our son being a jr. last night we were talking about it and I started throwing out other names that I liked and he got really upset. not angry upset but like hurt upset. He said, I want a jr. and if you don't then you can name him whatever you want because I won't care if he's not a jr.

I'm not really against him being a jr. I just thought there should be more discussion on the topic. and i'm not sold on everyone calling him Bear even though he... would have a real name to go by. if you don't remember my husbands name is Bernard which means bold as a bear, so my husband wants to name our son Bernard but call him Bear. my husbands nn is Ben. he went on to tell me that Bears were bold and courageous and why wouldn't we want that for our child...

I felt really terrible I upset him. I legit thought he might cry or something! I actually laughed because I didn't realize how serious he was.

So I think we're going to have a jr. my H will call him Bear and I think i'll call him Benny Bear or something..and at school he can write Ben or Benny on his papers and his friends can call him Bear if thats how it works out.

  • I think it's really sweet he wants a junior. :)

  • I think that sounds like an awesome compromise and it is sweet how much this means to your DH! Glad you guys were able to work it out.

Also, a note about NNs you might find yourself surprised by what just comes out of your mouth! DD's NN is Stinky because for some reason that is just what came out naturally...plus her name (Ava Nichol) doesn't really lend itself to an easy NN which is what I wanted.

Just a quick question because I am curious...why wouldn't he go by Bernard with a NN of Bear? Why Ben or Benny?

  • I'm glad you're okay with compromising on this and letting YH have the name he wants. I think you'll end up finding a good NN for him that you really like.

I've already told DH that if we have a boy, he will not have DH's name; if he did, he'd technically be a 3rd. I like DH's name and all, but no thank you!

  • I think it is cute.

Also side note, my H isn't a JR, he just has the same first name as his dad (different middle name).

FIL is Tim, for H's side of the family everyone calls my H Timothy. Your son could always go by Bernard if he wanted. (H prefers Tim, but knows he can't change his family)

  • @LuckyAngel07 - I can understand what you're saying about having a son NOT have your H's name.  LO will have DH's first name but different middle name.  DH doesn't care that LO is named after him, but named after his dad and grandfather.  They're all Donalds with different middle names.  So we're carrying on the tradition.  I'm not a big fan of the name Donald at all, but I love how much the sentiment of naming our son after FIL and GFIL means to H.

The bonus to conceding?  I got full naming rights on if LO had been a girl or if LO#2 is a boy!  :)

  • Its really sweet that he wants a jr. and the fact that he got so sentimental is cute. I personally like Bear, Ben or Benny. Those are cute NNs. Even if those don't end up feeling right to you, you may find one on your own.

My DD's real name is Alexis. I have 3 NNs for her: Lexi (the most common NN), Boo Boo, and Lex. It just ends up happening depending on the conversation I have with her. My friend calls her Wow Wow and my ILs calls her Cheekie (because they cannot pronounce her name - my MIL only speaks Spanish).

  • @smbenevides1989 I love Cheekie :) my mom said I have to find a different NN than stinky by the time she goes to school because it is mean but I don't know how I will because it just comes out! Also, when in a crowd she answers better to Stinky than to Ava Nichol!

And you said exactly what I was trying to say...you will find a nickname that feels right even if it isn't the one you originally planned on!

  • it's sweet that it means so much to your husband to have a jr. Nicknames are just nicknames, so you don't have to be 100% on what you are going to call him.

  • I really like the name and I think bear is a really cute nn. I'm glad that you may have made a decision. My DH was the same way with names, he was so stuck on what he wanted and would get all upset when I didn't agree. But since I'm such a good wife I told him we can name her what he wants, mostly because I was done argueing about it lol

Waiting on my baby girl <3 EDD 2/5/14
