What if injections don't work?

Just wanted to know if anyone here has done injections and it just didn't work.  I go in for an estrogen check tomorrow morning and I am almost positive I'm still not responding to the injections.  I'm not getting any cramping and just don't feel any different.  My REs nurse practitioner said that we'd have to re-evaluate things if my levels were too low still, but I'd think they'd want to up the dose again.  From what I've read around the net, 150IUs really isn't too high, so maybe I just need a higher dose...?

Re: What if injections don't work?

  • I had zero symptoms last cycle when I did finally O so try not to give up hope yet.

I don't know for sure, but I think having to up doses on injects is normal. My doc said if we need to move on to injects we would start low and go up as needed.

  • Do they see anything at all on the ultrasounds?

I would think they would start upping the dosage if there is no activity at all.

  • I started at 50 and went up to 75 the last few days before the trigger shot.  I think increasing the dosage is very common.

    Good luck!

  • I can only tell you what my RE told me, but she said "You WILL ovulate on injectables, it just may take some tweaking to get you there". It wasn't like Clomid where I might or might not O, it was "yes you WILL, we just have to figure out what dose will make you". I did several different amounts (I can't remember what they were now) but I definitely went up in my dose and then did some varying doses on alternating days. I did ovulate, the dang cycle just failed. Boo. Good luck to you! I hope all you need is a jump in dose

  • @RockABye, that's what I've read is most common, so it's just weird that the nurse practitioner said we'd have to reevaluate.  What do you mean the cycle failed?  Sorry it didn't work for you :(

I guess we'll see what the outcome is tomorrow and go from there.

  • Like RAB said, one way or another, you will respond to injectables.

I am a poor responder, so I had very little response to gonal f. they ended up switching me to menopur. It took a large dose, but I did respond eventually.

Hang in there! They'll figure out what works for you

Do you mind if I ask why you did IUI and IVF instead of timed intercourse?  My RE said we'd only do IUI if there were an issue with sperm and we haven't talk about IVF.  I don't know much about either, so just trying to get more knowledge.

Well, she said if this doesn't work, then there might be something else going on and we'd have to reevaluate and go from there.  But, she does always double check with my RE before telling me anything and if she's unsure, she has my RE talk to me instead, so I'm hoping she's just maybe new and hasn't seen a patient with my situation.

Oh, just meant that I didn't get KU. As far as Oing goes, it was a success. As far as pregnancy goes, it was a failure. That's all :) I'm assuming your doc just meant y'all would reevaluate the dosage, but I could be wrong. Hopefully that's all it is!

  • I had a slow/low response to gonal-f/follistim, and I O on my own.  Everyone is different.  When I asked the nurse if things were progressing ok, she said it was fine and that things can change overnight.  Each time I only had one follicle large enough to trigger and it wasn't until CD-18.  Hang in there and good luck!

  • Me! I didn't respond well to Gonal F and Menopur in my last IVF cycle. My E2 was at 69 when it should have been well over 100. They upped my dosage, but I still only had a few follicles (10 was the goal, and I had 4). They retrieved one egg. For my next cycle, I am starting on higher dosages. Remember, fertility treatments are a process. I hope you get good news tomorrow, but keep in mind that your doc has plenty of options up his/her sleeve to get you a BFP. ((hugs))

I can't speak for iwalktheline, but we're moving right to IUI instead of timed intercourse and we don't have any MFI.  The doctor told us it was our choice, we could try timed intercourse or do IUI and we opted for IUI because our schedules conflict during the week so we didn't want to spend money on injects/meds and just hope we got the timing just right in our limited window...IUI seems like a safer option for us and my doctor said he felt that we'd have better success with IUI.

I can't speak for iwalktheline either, but we also went straight to IUI vs timed intercourse. Our reasoning was that with my RE, the global cash price was the same regardless of whether you do IUI or TI, so we wanted to get the most bang for our buck and give us the best shot possible.  We we did IUI with my Clomid cycle as well for the same reason. :)

We are paying OOP for everything and unfortunately each little thing is a separate cost.  I wish we had the same option as you; that would be awesome!
