online tool to track expenses?

can you recommend a tool i can use online and that is compatible with an app so that i can track what we spend every month?

i have heard of mint.com but i think that sets budgets for you as well. i just really right now want to see what we are spending on.

thanks

Re: online tool to track expenses?

  • We use mint. It lets you categorize every expense and then subtotals them into the budgets. I've been really happy with it so far. We also have an ongoing Excel spreadsheet that my husband keeps. He's a CPA though, so I understand that's not practical for everyone to enjoy. Hope this helps!
  • I'm not a fan of mint, but I did use it for awhile.  Eventually it started miscategorizing and double counting purchases - at it wouldn't let me save any changes I made when trying to fix the mistakes.  It's a pretty common glitch.  You can read about it all over the internet.

You can give mint a shot and maybe you'll be lucky with your account.  Mine just got worse and worse, so I finally gave up and went to excel.

  • Mint has some bugs but that's what we use. You can use it for budgeting but we mostly just use it to track expenses as we don't really have a strict month-to-month budget. I've also heard of people loving YNAB, though I've never used it myself and it's paid and it's really all about budgeting. Mint I think would be better just for tracking purposes.
  • We use a free tool through our bank. You could check if your bank or other financial institution offers something similar.
  • I use Mvelopes, it is paid for and it has an app.  I've been happy with it for the last 7 years.  We were paying quarterly for a while and then they offered a life time subscription for a few hundred dollars and we took the plunge and never looked back.
