RE - Starting on this path

I have the number to a fertility specialist that my SIL used. I am leaving work in 15 minutes and plan on calling them to schedule an appointment. I am nervous I waited to long in this cycle to call, DH saw it as me being negative from the start when really I think I was just being proactive and realistic. Anyway, I waited and now I am about to start spotting (just noticed a tinge to my CM).

ANYWAY - do they normally want to start seeing you at a specific time in your cycle or does it not matter? I've already had CD3 hormone testing done, is there anything else I might have to be prepared for before this appointment?

  • Good luck! Making the call is always the hardest. Good luck!!

I honestly don't remember where I was in my cycle when they first saw me. All I know is that they took half my blood (and they'll likely take a bunch of yours... sorry...) and did an ultrasound just to get a baseline of where I was. Then again, my appt was a bit different than a "normal" first RE visit. I'd just had an HSG and knew that I was being referred to them so they could tell me I needed surgery so my visit may have been a tad different. Either way, I think bloodwork and u/s are pretty standard. I hope your visit goes well! GL making the call :)

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

The first appointment was more of a meeting for us. We did all the b/w, u/s, and HSG in the next cycle. Good luck! It's a sucky step, but I hope you get answers!

  • My first appt was also more of a meeting.  I had already done blood work with another endocrinologist, but if I hadn't he would of had me do that.  He also prescribed me Provera so that I could get an HSG done and then I came back in for an u/s a week after my HSG so that I could get started on Clomid.

  • Well I tried calling the RE office from 4:20 - 5:00 and just kept getting a busy signal! I called my ob/Gyno office to ask for a different RE referral and we agreed for them to send me a script for DH and have DH get his shit done and then they want to see me first before referring me to someone else. I am at the point where I don't care if DH is hesitant or not anymore, I am sick of crying and feeling like this.
I also can't believe the RE's office was busy for 40 minutes! I'm so disappointed in everything now.

Thanks everyone! DH is still convinced we don't have enough sex, and my timing is wrong. I think I'm going to have to give him a mini lesson on ovulating, temping etc to set him straight. Haha he can be so thick headed sometimes!

I'm sorry that you couldn't get through to the RE, that really stinks :(  Like others said, our first appointment was just talking but after that he gave me provera to bring on my period and we were able to get all of our testing done in one cycle.  I got tons of bloodwork and an ultrasound done on cycle day three, then the following week I got a saline sono and an HSG and then two weeks after that Dh was able to get in for his S/A.

I would try giving the RE another call either in the late morning or afternoon on Monday.  My RE's office is always swamped early in the morning (monitoring) and then in the evening (calling to give results), so maybe yours was just super busy trying to get everyone results before the weekend started.

  • GL! That first call is definitely the hardest! I hope you can get through on Monday. At our first appt (CD1) the doc did an ultrasound, and some blood work. I went back for CD 3 blood work, and then again for an HSG the following week. They didn't try to schedule the appointment at any specific time in my cycle, so I don't think it mattered. Keep us updated!

  • i would also try them one more time on monday. i'd say it's odd for a doctor's line to be completely busy for so long and not give automated options.

once i called it took about 4-6 weeks for an available appointment. when i called back about #2 they were able to bring me in the following week but it sounds like that was simply because i wasn't considered a new patient, just a returning patient. the first appointment was a consultation. a date with the dildo cam, went over history, talked a lot about what had been going on and what meds had been done. he formulated a treatment plan to begin the following cycle. he also left it up to us to have genetic testing done that day at their office to see if that was the root of the issue with my losses (it was OOP and he wasn't feeling like there was a genetic issue. we chose to have it done anyways). i had already had cd3, 7dpo bloodwork and an HSG and DH had already had an SA, so the RE didn't have any further tests to run before starting a treatment plan.

    good luck!
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • Thanks everyone agin! Your words are always comforting. DH is going for his SA next week and the lab is in the hospital that our dr is part of, so she gets the results right away. I already ad CD 3 work done so hopefully she can just make an appointment next week or early the week after and see what's next.
