Names

To keep the board rolling....

I'm definitely a part of the 1980s Kr fad along with DH in the Eri fad.

Though our kids names are both part of #3 (we picked both names when they were in 500s and 200s respectively and now they are Top 100)

Re: Names

  • Ha my name is a witch's hat! I was a fad :-P

Dd's name was called out inthe article. Apparently it started out popular in California! Cool to know.

Dd's name was a witch's hat that has turned into the start of a wave. I have read before that names go through a 100 year cycle so it makes sense. Dd is named after my grandmother which explains the cycle. I wanted something classic and that had meaning. It was 65th when I started looking at how popular it was when I was pg. 2012 it was 27th so its definitely becoming more popular.

  • I guess we went weird with Brinley--but it has been gaining in popularity since she was born.

Nolan is also on the rise.

  • We picked names that had meaning to us (middle names are all family names) and never once looked at a popularity list (meaning, we didn't care where it stood). We did check out Irish name lists, though - not for popularity but bc DH wanted Irish names for the boys - and I wanted Irish names that wouldn't get butchered too badly over here in America (ie. no Gaelic spelling).

I have no idea where any of the boys' names stand on the list - now I'm curious.

  • I always think naming trends are so interesting!  Before I had kids, I was obsessed with giving my kids a "unique" name, but when it came down to it, I just wanted to give them a solid name that was spelled correctly and transitioned into adulthood, regardless of popularity.  Of course I won't lie that I am peeved a Kardashian used Mason!  LOL!
  • I too love naming trends.  EJ is named after my grandmother, but not the exact same variant of the name. And it happens to be really rare here but not a made up name either. It seemed important to me at the time she wasn't another Sophia, Ava, or whatever else was topping the charts back in 2007. Of course I have mellowed but never regretted our name choice. though given the option, i much prefer naming dogs.
  • We never paid attention to the popularity or top names when we were coming up with names.  DH liked so few names that I couldn't limit it!  Also, I know I've said this here before, but I think because I DIDN'T have a popular name when I was a kid, I didn't mind  if mine had popular names.  I LONGED to have a popular name when I was a kid, and hated my name for a very long time.  There's good and bad to both.
  • Both of my kids (Jacob and Liam) are in the top 10 for boys and have been for years.  Doesn't really bother me.  And to be honest, we haven't run into THAT many people with the same name.  Jake is the only Jake/Jacob in is class...there might be one other kindergartener with that name, but he's in a different class.  Liam is the only Liam in his class of 18.  That may change down the road, but that's ok.  Like Amber said, there were so few names that we could agree on, I was just happy we found something!! :)

  • DH hates that his everyday name is a nickname and different than his legal name. It was weird to call him by his full name during the wedding.

I like my name, but sort of hated always having to be "Amy P" because there were ALWAYS multiple girls with my name. Not as bad as Jennifer, but close.

So we purposefully chose names without nicknames and that had not been popular for a long time. Middle names are family names.

  • My kid's names are not found when I search websites.  I really don't think they are that weird, but maybe they are?

That's how I felt too with both of my kids. Neither are in the top 100, and I prefer it that way.

  • Strange as it sounds, going more unique seemed more important for my girl than my boy.  I can't decide if it's because of the boy/girl difference or 1st/2nd child difference.

I will say though that boys names were more challenging for us to agree on.  We each had a favorite and I just outlasted DH on not conceding.

  • My oldest daughter has a popular name.  Dh and I picked it years before we even had a child; we just loved it.  Honestly, for as popular as her name supposedly is, she's the only one with that name at school, dance class, tball.
