Side sleeping problems

I've been trying really hard to sleep on my sides at night. I've noticed my hips will tingle/fall asleep/hurt. I also have a lot of back pain from laying on my side.

Did anyone else experience this (mainly the hip tingling)? Any ideas what I can do to help myself sleep more comfortably? I'm not using any type of pregnancy sleep pillow or anything at this point. I try to put a pillow between my legs but that doesn't last long because it is awkward for me when rolling over.

Thank you!!

Re: Side sleeping problems

  • I had a lot of hip pain until I started using a body pillow, then a snoogli. I was always a stomach sleeper and it took awhile for me to get used to not only sleeping on my side but also with a pillow between my legs, but I got used to it and it got more and more comfortable as I got bigger.

  • I was talking to my dr. about this last week and she said its just important to fall asleep on your left side. if you roll onto your back while sleeping then its OK. so if you wake up in the middle of the night on your back i'd stay that way to spare yourself the pain!
  • I have had some hip pain and some tingling too.  I tried the pillow between the legs but always seem to kick it out in the middle of the night.  I know to make sure you don't stack your hips directly on top of each other.  Put one leg further out than the other and that has helped me some.

  • You're probably just going to have to get used to having something between your knees.  It will help immensely.

  • Sleeping on a memory foam mattress topper was the only thing that helped me. I was so uncomfortable in labor and delivery without it!

I'm mostly a side sleeper, but I tend to sleep a little more on my front than side.  (No, baby will not be crushed.)  I tend to look more like the picture below, but with my left arm under my pillow.  Now that I have a Snoogle (which took some definite getting used to), I just sleep with my right leg up and over the pillow.  Also, I'm reading Husband-Coached Childbirth and the below position was recommended as a great sleeping position because it allows your uterus/belly to just rest on the bed.

  • The snoogle helped a lot. I didn't like it at first, but at the end, I couldn't sleep without it.

  • Ok I will try some of these things and see if it helps. I tend to want to sleep more on my right side for some reason but I know left is better. Unfortunately that is the side where I get a lot more shoulder and back pain. I have scoliosis anyways so I don't know if that could be affecting things too.

  • you can lay a body pillow next to you, and roll either backwards or forwards a bit so you aren't directly on your back, side or stomach.

  • I miss belly sleeping.  I have a snoogle - and I use additional pillows to put myself more upright to aid my never ending heartburn.  And my doctor said that so long as you're on a side, just try to sleep.  Left is better but you take what you can get.

  • I use the snoogle and another pillow behind me to keep me on my side. It actually helps a lot because I feel supported. Poor DH though. It take up a lot of space!
