Online Money Management Calendar

DH and I are looking for a way to better track our finances...for free. We see a financial planner, have long term goals and a monthly budget etc but somehow our theoretical budget is never the same as our actual account. We'd like to have a somewhat "live/ real time" budget accessible to both of us to help track our weekly expenses and plan for future big ticket items. Anyone try Pocketsmith or something similar? Erbur, Im looking at you. I know you are all over money management. Whats a good free tool?

  • not erbur but we use Mint.com and love it.  we each have the iPhone app and it tracks all of our accounts and our budget as well as long term goals and our retirement.  I love having it all in one place.

I was under the impression that Mint.com charges a fee...true or untrue? Is there a pared down free version maybe?

  • Mint is free, but I've stopped using it.  I didn't find it as effective as others.   You should be able to get a "virtual wallet" through your bank/credit union's online account access.  It will give you a good example of real-time budget status.

Give me a few minutes and I'll post some links/resources.
  • Mint is free. Erbur would that include other accounts? We use our actual bank account rarely for day to day purchases.

You know that I have subscribed to the "60% solution" for some time.
The gist of it is as follows:
    - 60%: covers utilities, groceries, rent/mortgage, car payment, insurance, gas/commuting costs, subscriptions (incl. Netflix, magazines, cable), etc.
    - 10%: retirement
    - 10%: short-term savings--vacations, new appliances, Christmas/bday gifts
    - 10%: long-term savings
    - 10%: "fun money" This could include entertainment/dining out/concerts/etc.

You can amend these as needed, especially given childcare costs or other  related expenses.

I also review my budget on a spreadsheet and break it down to the dollar amount per week (i.e., I know I have $100/wk to spend on groceries).
  • Thanks for the links. Ill check them out.
