I think late middle school early high school. Monitored. I have no clue why you would want your newborn to have a presence on social media, other than maybe a parent posting pictures or sharing with family/close friends. But, I'm also not one to share much on social media. I don't think most of my FB friends even know I'm pregnant.
I guess I won't know how I will actually feel until it happens. But as of now, I think 16 is the youngest appropriate age for both and I am not even comfortable thinking of photos of my newborn being on the internet. I'm paranoid though.
At what age would you let your child get Facebook, Instagram, etc? 12/13. the first time I get locked out, will be their last!
How do you feel about parents opening an account for their newborn? RIDICIOUSLY There was a girl on TK that already had gmail accounts for her unborn child. REALLY?!
Facebook/Instagram?--i'm not sure- working in a school i see all the drama it causes and with the changes in technology its hard to say, i would def monitor it
As for parents opening up an account for their newborn?--annoying!!! We have friends who had a baby in early Dec, they made their child an instagram account and so far are up to day # whatever bc i lost count so everyday they share a pic to FB of him doing NOTHING-basically sleeping, sleeping and sleeping!!!!
I've limited taking pics of Lilliana to once a month(her month pics), holidays, or if i take a really cute pic and i want to share and its only bc we have family who we dont see all the time and they can see her growing up other than that I dont think the world wants to see her with smashed peas all over face! Believe me I take plenty of pics all day every day, but i upload them to snapfish and share them with my mom, MIL and sister. No one on FB cares....
For social media accounts, I'd say teenager, between 13 and 16 depending on maturity and trust level. Agree with the others when it comes to getting locked out. They do that and they are going to have their ass handed to them!
As for babies having their own social media accounts, I've never heard of that before and it's pretty ridiculous.
We do have email accounts for both of my stepdaughters, but they are used to receive emails about their extra curricular activities. It makes it easier for both sets of parents to see any correspondence and prevents miscommunication. The girls don't even know they have them.
I guess I'm super paranoid bc at my internship at the michigan supreme court i mostly worked on csc cases (criminal sexual conduct) and saw a lot of bad stuff. There are literal predators out there and they can do horribly creative things to photos. Sad but true
I had a myspace account around the age of 14/15, but I was a really mature kid and don't think I would have gotten involved in the unbelievable behaviour kids engage in on the internet nowadays. I feel like 14 or 15 is appropriate, again given the child's maturity. And definitely monitored. Like PPs have said, you lock me out you get no use of the computer.
I would think 13/14/15ish. It depends on what things are like when I have kids at that age. I would allow them to have an email account sooner as long as I could monitor it. I was allowed to have one when I was young to write to pen pals, but my mom was either always with me or checked it at some point. I also think that it could be helpful especially now with how much research and such is done on the internet.
I think making accounts for young children is silly and stupid. Some people are weird. I'm sure I'll be a picture sharer, but they'll be private. I won't share tons, but I'll probably post a few a week. I personally love seeing baby pictures pop up! haha. We live near H's family but a few hours from mine, so I'd like them to be able to stay updated that way.
I would not let my child get Instagram. They own the rights to any photos you put on their site and have the right to use them at any time. I don't have an Instagram account for that reason. As for Facebook/whatever social media is around at that time, at least 13, the minimum age allowed. I would push it back as long as possible. At work, I see so many problems that start at home on Facebook. I'd want to avoid that for as long as possible. I would also want full access to the account.
Like @frank139@msu.edu said, people can do almost anything to a photo. I don't believe in putting children's photos on social media. I have never posted a picture of my nephew on Facebook and when this baby is born, I won't put pictures of him or her on it either. MIL and SILs will be very upset. I'm going to approach the topic soon with them.
I think it's ridiculous to open a Facebook account or Twitter for a newborn. I think there will be room for them when their time comes to get an account. I have heard of people getting email addresses for their young children so they can get their names. I think that's ridiculous too. Big deal if you have to be janedoe1234 instead of just janedoe.
I think middle school/ high school age is a good time to discuss it. Who knows what kind of social media will be out by then and I think it also needs to be based on the maturity of the kid. I absolutely do not see the need for newborns / young kids having there own social media accts!
I'm agreeing with a lot of prior posts--probably closer to early high school age. I was one of those weird kids growing up who was on social networking at a younger age. (Blogged journal entries in middle school, myspace at 16 or 17) But at the same time, I feel I was using a bit more common sense than most kids today.
As for the parents who created accounts for kids that young, I think that's a bit much. When that time comes, I feel like I'd want to limit my audience as to who's seeing pictures of my kid.. it reminded me of a discussion from at work yesterday. My coworker and I got onto the subject of kids and she explained that a facebook friend of hers has posted TONS of pictures to the point where a picture of the inside of a potty chair has shown up on news feed. Ew.
See I would do this for mine and H's Family in NC. My cousin made a shutterfly "blog" to load pics of her son for us to see. It was password protected etc. That way it wasn't spamming FB haha. I loved going on there once in a while and seeing everything.

I would say teenage on for both, but monitored. I agree with @mana8503 if I get locked out at all they are done!
Open up social media pages for newborns?! Ridiculous. I think the only time that is acceptable is on caringbridge.com.
Wtf about the baby accounts?! I've never heard of that. Crazy!
