Getting laid off...wtf!

Got an email from my boss the other day asking if it would be ok to call me to talk about a few things. I figured he needed some help with figuring out how to do my tasks since they didn't hire anyone to temporarily replace me. He called and informed me that they'd be laying me off. They'll be giving me a severance package (whoop dee freaking do), paying for my health insurance through March, and I can start collecting unemployment now instead of waiting until the end of my maternity leave. I wasn't getting any of my mat leave paid, so by doing this now, I can at least collect right away..that was his way of making me feel better :::eye roll::: I am a wreck. It's not that I loved my job, but it was a job with a paycheck and I've been there for over 6 years...plus I wasn't expecting this at all. I have a document from my boss that I'll be having a lawyer look at so that I don't get screwed over. Seriously, who the eff does this to a woman who JUST had a baby? His reasoning for not mentioning it before is that he didn't want to upset me or stress me out while I was pregnant...but hello asshole, now I'm 1000X more stressed because in taking care of a human being instead of just carrying one inside of me! I'm pissed, stressed, crying hysterically thinking about all of the bills we have and wondering how they will get paid....

  • Not to steal your thunder but the exact same thing happened to me right after I had Teddy only they gave me nothing. I ended up finding an even better job that I love. I know it's easier said than done but cheer up momma!! Enjoy this time with your LO. You'll never get this time back. The work and money stuff will get sorted out but this newborn time with this child will never happen again.

  • How horrible! I would make sure a lawyer looks at everything because I'm pretty sure that's discrimination. Even if he would have let you go before you had the baby it would have been discrimination. I know this will sound stupid but just try to relax and enjoy that sweet baby boy. Everything will work out!

That totally sucks! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out for the best for you.

I also think you're doing the right thing by having a lawyer review things. Laying off a new Mom is a pretty $hitty thing to do.

In the meantime enjoy your time with your little boy!

  • Omg, I'm so sorry Christine. I'd be stressed out too. I hope a better job that you enjoy comes from this. For now, just focus on your adorable baby boy. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!

  • Is that even legal? I know here you can't get rid of someone while they are on maternity leave, its protected, that's kind of the whole point of it..job protection.
  • UGH Christine! So horrible! Prayers sent to you. Hope everything works out. hang int here!

  • That is so horrible! I am so sorry! Definitely talk to an attorney about that just to make sure it is something they can do.

  • ((Hugs)) Hopefully It's a blessing in disguise! Since you weren't getting paid currently it gives you a chance to get paid while you're off and you'll probably end up with a better job. Maybe he'll change his mind, but if I remember right he's wanted to lay you off before and has also cut back your hours. There's something better out there for you!

  • That totally sucks! Prayers and hope I find another soon! That's way better! Idk how they can lay you off just like that after having a baby.
