So I guess I have PCOS...

...most likely anyway. I got my lab work back, and my testosterone was 48, on a 8-48 range. Doctor says even though it's *technically* in the normal range, I most likely have PCOS based on my history and the fact that I have polycystic ovaries. So that's the update on me. Still no definite answer for the back pain, it's probably just a combination of pelvic congestion syndrome, endometriosis and PCOS (although she said PCOS doesn't usually cause pain), but at least I am aware of that diagnosis now I guess..

  • Thanks ladies. I'm really surprised by the diagnosis, considering all I was looking for was an answer to my back problems, but I'll manage.

To top this all off though, I got my first pp AF today. :(

  • *hugs* I'm so sorry.

I will tell you, one of the reasons my doctor tested me was because I commented about how eating some ramen noodles one night gave me such bad back cramps I couldn't sleep. Seems to be because I have insulin resistance (common with PCOS) there are certain foods I should limit, I don't than I guess that's what happens.

  • That is interesting @nightmare_of_beauty. Luckily my diabetic panel came back normal, so I don't have to deal with that, but it's still frustrating.

What's odd is that my back almost went out this morning, then AF came. I should've known because it always gets like this with AF. It'll spasm and become a sharp, stabbing pain instead of dull and achy like usual.

  • I'm so sorry, hun. PCOS sucks.

At least they don't think you're insulin resistant with it. PCOS can cause pain in their own special way. When a cyst bursts - you know it. Especially if there were several of them. Also, PCOS can cause intense AF cramping (that was my number one indicator).

Here's hoping AF takes it easy on you this cycle.

  • Yeah my AF cramping is bad, like my abdomen, thighs and back are on fire. Not every single month, but almost every month. It's been like that since the beginning. I always just blamed endo. But maybe it was so bad since I have both? :(

  • @sgautschi - maybe. I have both as well! *high five*

In high school, I ended up missing full days of classes because I couldn't get off my bedroom floor. At the time, we didn't know I had PCOS or endo. Heating pads are your friends. And LOTS of ibuprofen.

  • Haha we should start a club. Lol

Yeah I missed school once a month too, starting at 12 years old. I would take ibuprofen, and sometimes Vicodin, and try to sleep off the pain. It was horrible.

And actually heating pads make it worse for me. Idk what that's about...They helped for the first year or so then it would make it so much worse. Maybe that's from the pelvic congestion. Idk.

  • @sgautschi heating pads have never really helped me with AF pains

  • For whatever reason, being in the fetal position on the floor (had to be the floor, not my bed or couch) with a heating pad to me worked - until I stood up lol

  • It's crazy to hear you girls talking about the pain.  I got on BC at 15 because the cramps were so bad I would have to miss school. Like @pennstated912 the only thing that helped was laying in the fetal position on the floor.  Preferrably a cold floor.

If only we knew then what we do now.

  • :( I'm sorry for all you ladies in pain. And I am sorry for the diagnosis sgautschi. It I frustrating to be in so much pain and nothing you can do about it. I used to throw up because the pain was so bad.

BCPs are my only relief because they keep the majority of my pain to once a month. I skip the placebo pills and just take it with no break (my doctor's suggestion). It took 6 months for me to actually skip my period this month and I still had all the pain, cramping, fatigue and nausea just no bleeding. Hoping next month goes better.

On the other hand the depot provera birth control shot stopped my periods and made my pain minimal but I was an angry irrational emotional person on it so I needed to switch. I was told, however, that you can get the depo shot while breastfeeding.

  • I find it strange she saif it doesn't cause pain, yet all of you say you have as bad of pain as I do with AF and sometimes just in general.

Fetal position wasn't good for me. Really no position was, but it hurt to "squish things together" and I have to push my underwear down away from my abdomen because any type of pressure is painful. I can't even lightly touch it during AF. :(

Oddly enough I got this same pain in the beginning and end of my pregnancy.

It's really interesting comparing symptoms and it definitely is explaining a lot.
