I'm sad.

Yesterday my favorite patient went into the hospital. When his wife called I took the call and she sounded frantic. I had the gut feeling then that he was going to pass.
Later on the doctor came through for rounds, and said that the patient was in for septic shock and going to be in ICU.
A coworker just texted me to let me know that he passed today. I am going to miss this patient like crazy!
I always know it's a possibility for our patients to die (end stage renal disease) and try not to get too close. But this one was really special to me.

Sorry this is kinda long. I just needed to get this out. It's going to be rough on M-W-F for a few days.

Re: I'm sad.

  • I'm so sorry BEB.  It's hard to not get attached to patients, but there are ones that have a different impact and you can't help it.

  • Seeing them 3x a week, it definitely is difficult. I am usually good at separating work and home, but there are always a few who are able to weasel their way into your heart!!
  • I'm so sorry. You can tell you have a kind heart.

  • Thank you @lilliesandvino. I like to think that I am a caring, compassionate person. It's nice for others to recognize that in me also.
  • So sorry, BEB.  I don't think there's anyway not to get attached to at least some patients in your line of work. (((hugs)))

  • I used to work with cancer patients, so I can completely relate. It's hard not to build close relationships because sometimes there are just those patients that you are close with for whatever reason, and it's definitely sad when they pass. Im so sorry. ((Hugs)) :(

  • I'm sorry for your loss.  It is hard to keep work and home separated with those patients that just find their way in.  Must mean that you are leaving an impression on them, just as they are on you.  I'm sure he appreciated everything you did for him. *hugs*
