NBR: Las Vegas Must See/Do/Eat

Hey ladies!
Late next month, DH and I are going to Vegas for the first time ever.  There's SO much information out there are things to see or places to eat.  What are your musts?  We are staying at Treasure Island because that's where we got the best deal.  DH wants to go see Penn & Teller for sure and I want to see a Cirque show possibly.
Any places to eat you recommend or things to do/see besides obviously drinking and gambling?

  • As far as restaurants, it depends on how much you want to spend.

It really does. There is literally every price range of restaurant there.

  • We plan on doing a mix of cheap and expensive. If we go to a place that's $100 a plate, it may be only once.

  • Penn & Teller are hilarious! Stay after the show- they will come out for a meet and greet. I don't think you can go wrong with a Cirque show, either.

There are sort of two parts to Vegas- there's the strip where you guys are staying. Everything is beautiful and it can be fun to visit different casinos just to check them out. Aria is gorgeous but there wasn't much to do there last time we went. Wynn and Bellagio are fun to walk through as well. There are a ton of free shows, just five-fifteen minute sort of things all over the place, like the fountain show at Bellagio.

The second part is downtown and that's more classic Vegas. They tend to block the streets off at night so you can wander around between casinos and check out some of the street vendors or street food if you are in the mood. There's also an overhead light show on Freemont street that's free.

The weather right now should be something you don't have to worry about, but the casinos on the strip are farther away than they look, so in doubt, drive or take a cab! Valet for any shows, it will make leaving much easier (and, if you are still waiting to get your car, you can always give a tip to be moved up in line).

The food should be pretty good just about anywhere you go. Some of the buffets, while pricey, are fantastic, like the one at the Wynn.

Also, if you do end up gaming, make sure to get a player's card at whichever casino you are at first. You can be comped things depending on how long you play- like free breakfast and things along those lines.

  • If you watch Food Network, a ton of celeb chefs have restaurants there - some have multiple at different price points. I LOVE Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill.

I'm a fan of Mesa Grill.

One of my faves is Estiatorio Milos, which is a Greek restaurant.  Really pricey, but it was delish.  It's located at the Cosmopolitan.

  • My favorite parts of my one trip to Vegas were the days that we went somewhere else.  That sounds weird to say, but hiking around Red Rocks Canyon was amazingly beautiful, and Hoover Dam was just plain amazing.  If you have a day when you're looking to get away from the strip, I definitely suggest doing one of those two things.

As far as stuff on the strip and downtown, I went a few years ago now, so I'm really no help.  Things change there so fast!
  • Our splurge meal was at the Eiffel Tower restaurant for lunch, and it was worth it.  Beautiful view, the food was incredible, and I loved that it was quiet (I got a little overstimulated in Vegas).

We saw two Cirque shows: Zoomanity, which is adults only, and Ka.  Both were worth the price.

  • The next time we go to Vegas I really really want to find the tackiest, most hilarious wedding chapel venue and have Elvis renew our vows.  :)

  • I can't recommend a Cirque show enough. Any of them, really. You must go!

Bouchon is delicious, but pricey. Joel Robuchon is phenomenal but beyond pricey (For a 16 course meal/ wine pairing you are talking almost $900/per person - INSANE). L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon is slightly cheaper (still $160 per person w/o drinks though).

On the cheap (ish), Lotus of Siam is terrific. Burgers at Burger Bar. Sandwiches at Earl of Sandwich.

Um.....If you are afraid of height, don't do the elevator to the top of the Eiffel tower - I almost had a panic attack up there, although it's a fun view of the water show.

  • Cheap delicious meal: Earl of Sandwich (at Planet Hollywood). If you're in the middle of the strip at City Center and need a quick meal, downstairs in Monte Carlo there is a food court.

I Love MESA Grill (in Ceasars) and we go every time we're there! Our last trip we splurged on Hubert Keller's Fleur (Mandalay Bay) and it was so worth it! We ate at Julian Serrano's in Aria and it was tiny plates that weren't worth (taste-wise) what we paid. We ended up eating a second dinner. StripHouse was a standout intimate steakhouse meal. If you can't tell, eating in Vegas is my favorite part! You can take a cheap cab to get to In N Out off the strip too. :)

If you go through the casinos, there are free monorail type things between Mandalay, Luxor & Excalibur, as well as one that goes from T.I. To the Mirage.

The Beatles Cirque show and Penn and Teller were both very good!
I got myself a massage at one of the hotel spas and enjoyed that.

"O" is the best Cirque in Vegas, in my opinion. I've seen almost all of them (except for the Michael Jackson one). Go see it! Treasure Island has a cute pirate show running for free during the day.

Food: Bouchon is AMAZING. Go eat there if you can and want to spend the money. There is a really good Tapas place at the Aria. Le Cirque at Bellagio is yummy and swanky. Crepes at Paris are pretty yummy. Serendipity for frozen hot chocolate, although if you've been to the NYC one it's not as cute.

The Venitian is my favorite hotel/casino. I really like their pool too. Tryst at The Wynn is a fun bar/club that has a HUGE waterfall.

I didn't care for downtown Vegas. And word of caution, don't ever step foot in Circus Circus, it is sooooo gross and smell like butt and cigarettes.
  • Oh, and the roller coaster at NY,NY will knock your brains out of your head. In a bad way, not a "that was so much fun" way.

I'll be there next month too. I'm going 11th-13th for my son's competition. The only thing on my must list is the M&M store. lol.

My son's gf's bday is that week and I think he's planning on doing the gondala (sp?) at Venician.

I am in love with Vegas.  I seriously think I might have a problem.  Not with gambling, just with the town.  I do like to gamble but mostly I just like to be there.  The city has such a fun energy.

Last time we were there we ate at Gordon Ramsey Steak at the Paris.  I thought the braised short ribs were amazing and my dad loved his steak.  DH was underwhelmed.  But, Paris is my favorite hotel and casino and while I can rarely (ok never) afford to stay there it is my favorite place to visit, gamble, and eat.  Le Creperie in Paris gets mixed reviews but I've never had a bad meal there.  Mon Ami Gabi at Paris has a pretty excellent brunch.

The Bellagio buffet is great but, for my money, the best is the Bacchanal buffet in Caesars Palace.

Skip secret pizza at the Cosmopolitan.  It was awful, especially if you come from a pizza town.  But, if you're going out the Rio to see Penn and Teller you can eat at the Burger King.  They have topping options that you don't ever see and my husband nearly fell over.  Their buffet is okay, too.  If you want you can walk across the street to the Gold Coast to get some old Vegas feel.  The casino is outdated and old-looking but the cocktail service is good and it is usually quite and not very crowded.  I wouldn't eat there.  Also, if you want to play bingo, Gold Coast is the closest place to the strip.

I don't very often travel downtown but when I was there I thought it was okay.  It was cool to see the old casinos and the light show (Fremont Street Experience) was fun.  If you want, you can zip line down Fremont street.  I wouldn't walk, especially at night, since the area between the Wynn and downtown (passing the Stratosphere, Riviera, and Circus Circus) is not that great.  Also, it is a really long walk.  There is a bus (the deuce) that runs 24 hours a day between the strip and downtown.  A 24 hour pass was $7 last time we were there.

I tend to favor the mid or center-strip to the Wynn for most of my trips (I think TI would be considered center strip, too).  I don't often venture down to MGM, Excalibur, Tropicana, or the other hotels down there.  We usually stay at Harrah's and spend most of our time in that area unless we are going to a show.

The best cocktail service I've experienced has been at Harrah's, Paris, and the Palazzo.  Be careful when sitting at video poker machines at the bars.  Some of the casinos have started to require a maximum bet for complimentary drink service (I'm thinking of the Wynn in particular).

Geez, I guess I could yammer on about Vegas for pages.  I've been there at least twice a year since I was 21 (31 now) and love it each time I go.  Message me for more so I don't continue to bore everyone to death.

This. I'm not a fan of Vegas at all (the strip/casinos a area) really but red rocks and Hoover dam and lake Meade were great.
