Ikea Kitchen Cabinets: Hey or Nay?

We're doing a massive home repair/renovation next spring, including a new kitchen. We have just started looking at cabinets, and I like some of Ikeas, but not sure about the quality. We have other furniture from Ikea, but it's furniture not a kitchen.

My big thing is that I want to have a medium gray for the base cabinets, with a lighter gray cabinet on the walls. Having a hard time finding them, without their being custom or my painting stock cabinets.

Re: Ikea Kitchen Cabinets: Hey or Nay?

  • IKEA Cabinets are pretty good quality. The doors are solid wood, and come with the slow-close option for both the doors and drawers. The frame is Particle board, but you will find that with most retailers now, unless you want to quadruple your price.  IKEA cabinets also come with a 25 year warranty, which I think is a great deal. We are planning on going with them when we renovate our kitchen.

IKEA has a gray option, but not two different shades and it's their lacquer/high gloss line of cabinets that are really modern looking and are flat front.

There are other companies similar to IKEA, too.  Check out The RTA Store, although it doesn't seem like they have any options in gray.  You can also search "ready to assemble kitchen cabinets" and you will get a lot of options.
  • i've noticed that a lot of renovations featured on apartmenttherapy or thekitchn have used ikea cabinets.  i'm sure they're a good value.

  • If you are happy with the style of your cabinets and simply want to change the color, check out rustoleum's cabinet transformation kit. It is a little work but extremely inexpensive and holds up great!
  • Honestly, I can tell when Ikea cabinets are used. Ikea cabinets photograph really well, but IRL, they don't feel very high quality. I've seen kitchen renovations trying to mix Ikea cabinets with higher end materials for the counters, backsplash, and fixtures and it doesn't look good. But, if you are going for the "modern, urban hipster" look, and is something that fits into your home, then go for it.
  • Thanks ladies.

Our current cabinets are terrible, so we can't just redo them. Haven't decided what we're going to do yet. We're not looking to install an expensive kitchen with granite counter tops, etc. We are updating our kitchen and obviously want it to look nice, but on a budget.

Checked out Ikea's cabinets in person and bought a couple of doors that we found in the as is...they seem pretty good, but we are checking out some other options too.

  • I've heard they're great at first but after a few years they really show their wear. BUT the family that said that unfortunately are notorious for abusing items! Good luck!!

  • I'm pretty sure our cabinets are Ikea (we rent our house), and sometimes when I open them and pull too hard I'm afraid they're going to fall off, or if I lean on one when I'm cleaning the floor or something I'm afraid to put all my weight on it.  I remember growing up and we had solid oak cabinets and I slammed everything around for like 15 years and we only had one broken door.  I despise the look of oak, but the quality was definitely higher.

Like PP I'm notoriously hard on my possessions, but if you don't treat your kitchen too roughly in general then you'll probably be fine with Ikea. I love the showroom kitchens so I don't blame you for wanting them!  If you expect wear and tear on your kitchen, or little ones who don't know any better, looking elsewhere might be better in the long run.
