Stupid question- contractions?

So I am supposed to lay down for an hour 2X a day and count my contractions.  I've been doing this for 3 weeks and I've never felt one.  I'm so worried that I'm missing them and it's messing up my whole program.  When you ladies get them do you know what they are? Am I going to be able to tell when I get one?

Re: Stupid question- contractions?

  • My early contractions felt like menstrual cramps, as they progressed they were sharper, timeable pains and there was no mistaking them once active labor started. Full on pain everywhere in my midsection.

  • BH you may not feel, but it would just be a tightening feeling, like when you do crunches.

  • I really hope I don't go into labor anytime soon.  I think it's the BH type contractions I'm supposed to be counting. I wish I could just feel one so I would know what they're like.

  • Up until this day, I still don't know what BH contractions feel like. The monitor could pick them up but I had no clue I was having BH contractions.

The day before going into labor, I started having Menstrual like cramps at first, then within the hours they started getting sharper and sharper and I could definitely count those and you could not miss those.
  • I had a TON of BH. Usually they weren't uncomfortable and I couldn't really feel them in my belly. This sounds weird, but I'd get a feeling like I couldn't take a deep breath all of a sudden, or a pressure in my chest, and then I'd poke my belly and feel it was rock hard.

I had a really irritable uterus and for the last 6 weeks I would have constant BH if I was standing up.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • I don't know if I missed it, but is there a reason you are supposed to be counting contractions? Are you having other symptoms you OB is concerned about?

  • To this day, I have never felt one even when the monitor was showing I was having pretty strong ones. The doctor always told me it would feel like menstrual pain.

    How are you feeling?

  • Are you sure you are having any? This seems like a strange request. With DD I barely had any and didn't have them until late and really didn't even know for sure if I was having any.

With DS they started earlier and pretty much felt like tightening. Belly would get hard and I maybe would feel some pressure, but they definitely don't hurt like real contractions.

I'm part of the preterm labor prevention program through my hospital. I have to monitor all this stuff and I get a call once a week from a nurse to go over everything. They tell me I'll start feeling BH type contractions early because I'm so big already. Pink- I'm feeling really good so far.

  • My OB had me lay down twice a day to count kicks, not contractions. I honestly didn't feel any BH contractions until a week or two before I delivered.

  • I had lots and lots of BH and started getting them around 26weeks.  Mine were painless usually, but my whole uterus would go rockhard.  The monitor couldn't pick them up even though I was having them 4-5min apart at 33w, was 3cm dilated and 50% effaced, and tested positive for the febril fibronectin test.  I was given the steroid shots put on bedrest for a month as a result and they continued every day until I delivered.

All that to say, I think if you aren't feeling anything, that is a great sign at this stage! Hopefully those babes are comfy in there for another 9-10 weeks :)

  • I was admitted to the hospital for the first time around 36 weeks, and they said, "ohhh you're having contractions 2 minutes apart!" I had no freakin idea at all. Not labor contractions, but I still had no idea. You will know real contractions. Holy crap, you will know.

  • Thanks ladies. I still have no idea if I'll be able to feel them or not but I guess if I can't that a good sign. I'm glad I'm in this program just to be safe but it might cause more stress than its worth :-/

  • I think the first contraction I felt was the night before I delivered, but it felt more like I had to poop than anything else and it wasnt consistent.

After my water broke, my contractions were dull pain at first. Halfway to the hospital, the contractions became unbearable and tough to concentrate through.
