Recommend a Reliable Beater car

H and I are going crazy, and are considering selling both of our cars. EEP!  Mine is a $20k car, and his is an $11k car.  We both have payments, and we realized is we got rid of them then we would no longer have the payments and would save money by having liability only insurance.  It would suck to get rid of my AWD vehicle for the midwest winters, but being debt free feels so much better!

So I know a lot of you on here drive paid for vehicles.  What do you drive, and what would you recommend?  We would love to find ones around $7k or less if we could.  FWIW H drives 100 miles daily.  So his needs to get decent gas mileage.  I drive 40 miles, and don't need to get as good of gas mileage since i'm reimbursed for it through my work.  But the less I spend in gas, the more we have to put toward debt. My gas stipend stays the same no matter what.

We may or may not do this, but I wanted to at least get a feel for what "cheap" cars are out there that hold up well.

Re: Recommend a Reliable Beater car

  • my car is a 2003 ford focus and is still running really well.  No major issues.  DH's is a 2003 honda element and is also running well.  He will likely need a new car before I will because he uses it a lot for work
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I drive a 2008 Toyota Corolla (purchased when it was 2 years old with only 6K miles on it)-- it is not our first Toyota, VERY fuel efficient
Look for anything used in the Toyota, Honda and Subaru offerings.  (DH is still driving his 2003 Subaru Imprezza OUuback Sport and has only had routine maintenance that needed to be done (tires, oil changes and scheduled maintenance).  It has reasonable MPG for an AWD vehicle (in the mid to high 20's)
  • I have a 2006 scion xa. I paid $6,000 for it a year ago and it's been great. Toyota makes scion so I know it's a reliable brand and it gets great gas mileage.
  • I'm a huge fan of Nissans and Toyota (Honda is good too). Our current car is a 98' Toyota Camary and it's up to 152k miles and still going strong. When I met my H, I had a '98 Nissan Sentra and probably would still have it if I hadn't sold it before we moved to Spain. Both are great cars and very good on gas.

My dad also has a Nissan Xterra...not sure of the year, but he's had it for at least 10 years with no major issues and it still runs great. My mother has a Jeep Liberty that is the biggest POS. I think she's spent more money in repairs than the truck is worth at this point.....

Good to know...I didn't realize Scion was owned by Toyota...
  • Remember to include an inspection by an independent mechanic prior to purchasing any used vehicle.
  • I drove a 1999 for 13 years and when we parted ways it was still ticking.
If you can in general the less motorized accessories the less there is to break. Like hand crank windows.

  • Honda Civic :) I had a 2001 until 2011, but I bought a Ford Escape because we had a baby and now have a second child. I would've kept it forever tho.
  • I have a Chevy Cavalier with 240k miles on it and it still runs like a beast. My dad is a mechanic and he recommends Honda over everything. He says they see less repairs and better miles (life miles not mpg necessarily)
  • My first car was a 1996 Toyota Camry with 182,000 miles, I've since upgraded to 2010 Corolla S but my parents kept the Camry. Now it has 282,000 miles on it and runs great still! There are a few cosmetic defects, but nothing too major. And few repairs have been made on it- power steeting pump at around 220,000 miles, new tires, but fairly routine stuff for a car that age with that kind of milage.
  • I haven't had a car that I've kept for a long time but I will say this about Toyotas - I just bought a Camry (used - 2009) and when I brought it in to have pictures taken for the inspection, one of the mechanics said that Camrys and Toyotas in general are great cars to own and work on, and have the lowest cost of ownership (in his opinion). So take that for what it's worth. I'm hoping to keep this Camry until it gives out.

  • Thanks everyone for the recommendations!
We did all of the math, and we're still better off keeping our current cars.  At least they're both ones that we love and mine only has 28k miles on it.  So it can last us a long time.
