H and I are going crazy, and are considering selling both of our cars. EEP! Mine is a $20k car, and his is an $11k car. We both have payments, and we realized is we got rid of them then we would no longer have the payments and would save money by having liability only insurance. It would suck to get rid of my AWD vehicle for the midwest winters, but being debt free feels so much better!
So I know a lot of you on here drive paid for vehicles. What do you drive, and what would you recommend? We would love to find ones around $7k or less if we could. FWIW H drives 100 miles daily. So his needs to get decent gas mileage. I drive 40 miles, and don't need to get as good of gas mileage since i'm reimbursed for it through my work. But the less I spend in gas, the more we have to put toward debt. My gas stipend stays the same no matter what.
We may or may not do this, but I wanted to at least get a feel for what "cheap" cars are out there that hold up well.

Re: Recommend a Reliable Beater car
Look for anything used in the Toyota, Honda and Subaru offerings. (DH is still driving his 2003 Subaru Imprezza OUuback Sport and has only had routine maintenance that needed to be done (tires, oil changes and scheduled maintenance). It has reasonable MPG for an AWD vehicle (in the mid to high 20's)
My dad also has a Nissan Xterra...not sure of the year, but he's had it for at least 10 years with no major issues and it still runs great. My mother has a Jeep Liberty that is the biggest POS. I think she's spent more money in repairs than the truck is worth at this point.....
I haven't had a car that I've kept for a long time but I will say this about Toyotas - I just bought a Camry (used - 2009) and when I brought it in to have pictures taken for the inspection, one of the mechanics said that Camrys and Toyotas in general are great cars to own and work on, and have the lowest cost of ownership (in his opinion). So take that for what it's worth. I'm hoping to keep this Camry until it gives out.
