Any doctors nurses here or anyone in medical field? General question....

If you go to the ER with chest discomfort should the hospital check your basic blood work or is that not necessary?

Re: Any doctors nurses here or anyone in medical field? General question....

  • Anyone?

My brother went to the ER for chest discomfort and they didn't even check his blood. Shouldn't they have checked to make sure he was at risk of a heart attack or done an EKG?

  • I collapsed with chest pains about 10 years ago. They did not take blood. Turns out it was low blood pressure coupled with pain due to shortness of breath. An ER is to contain a life threatening illness it isn't a doctors office. If they determined nothing life threatening he should follow up with a Dr. and possibly a specialist THEN they may do blood work.

The reason I ask is because when he walked into an urgent care (like an ER) with the same symptoms, they took his blood when he was experiencing chest pain.

    Glad you are ok.

  • you would think but in the last week we were at urgent care and ER with DD and her hives.  Urgent care said to take Benadryl and follow up with doctor if needed. Went to doctor 2 days later who said to give it a week and see if it gets better (waste of money).  I ended up taking her to the ER yesterday because the hives were on her face and covering 80% of her body.  ER gave me topical gel to put on the hives and gave her a dose of liquid Claritin.  Within an hour they were all gone.  I think the ER is most concerned with tackling the problem right then and there, not doing blood work.

Glad you're daughter is better. Sorry she had to go through that!! You're right in that they just want to tackle the problem at hand but I know people who have gone to the ER with chest pain and they've done blood work. Get this....the nurse said he would do it for him then never did!!

maybe not the best hospital then.  We refuse to go to a hospital really close to us because I had to wait 3.5 hours to be seen for a sliced open finger that hurt like hell and needed stitches.  He should follow up with his primary care doctor.

I agree! He did follow up with his doctor. You would think a hospital would take chest pain or discomfort more serious though. He was experiencing the discomfort after his doctor's hours which is why he ended up at the er.
