WBC- Nordic author- The Bat by Jo Nesbø

I've heard a lot about the Harry Hole series and figured I'd start with the first one (even though it wasn't the first translated to English).  It involved the Norwegian detective traveling to Australia to help investigate the murder of a Norwegian semi-celebrity who had moved there.  I thought it was interesting but I didn't love it. The chapters were short and everything moved along at a good clip but I just didn't find Harry very likable.  I will give the next book in the series a shot before giving up on it though.

  • I read it last month and gave it 3 stars on Goodreads.  I didn't love it, but I made the same decision as you did about the series.   I think other books in the series were better received.  The later books in the series seem to have much better ratings than The Bat.

    my read shelf:
Jenn's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

  • I started with The Redbreast, because it was the first one translated into English. So far it's the only one I've read, even though I have Nemesis and The Devil's Star.

I thought Redbreast was pretty good, though it's very WWII-centric. Harry Hole still didn't strike me as the most likable character ever, because he's the archetypal gritty, hard-luck detective. I didn't find him unlikable, though.
