Short term disability

My new job does not provide any paid maternity leave.  They also do not offer short term disability.  I know Aflac is one company that people use to purchase individual policies.  Does anyone know of others that are not group/employer based?  Has anyone here researched or purchased it before?  Anything I should know (other than I obviously need to purchase it before getting pregnant)?

Re: Short term disability

  • I think it all depends on the state you live in. Good luck though. I hope you can find something that will help.

I'm starting with our regular insurance provider.  Their site says disability insurance isn't available in MA, NJ, and RI.  Maybe those are the only three?

Could be. Nj has stating short term disability so while it is better than nothing but you can't get supplemental unless your employer offers it.

  • We looked into it with Aflac as an individual policy, and it ended up not being worth it.  I live in IL, so this is what the rules were for here.

Premium was based on your salary.  So my payment was $50/week, $200/month.  You had to have it for 10 months before it would pay out.  It also only paid 60% of your salary for up to 6 weeks for a vaginal birth and 8 weeks for c-section.  However, you had to deplete your vacation time before it would kick in, and that vacation time counted toward the 6 and 8 weeks they "covered."  I get 3 weeks of vacation per year. So we figured that worst case scenario I would have 3 weeks of vacation to cash out first, then they would pay me 60% of my salary for the remaining 3 weeks.

When we did the math, we were paying in $2k over the course of 10 months (assuming we got pregnant right away). Then would've only been paid for 3 weeks at 60% of my salary.  In the end we were better off putting aside the $200/month into our "baby fund" so I would have an income through maternity leave.

However, there's a clause in there where you get paid $500 for each day you are hospitalized.  So if you end up being in the hospital for 2 days, then that's $1,000 in your pocket. My friend had STD through Aflac when she had their son, and she had to stay in the hospital for 4 days due to high blood pressure.  She received a check for $2k, and that pretty much paid their deductible and co-pay on the delivery.   So there are other things in the plan that could be beneficial.

  • we are in PA and aflac told us that they only provide STD to employers here. we did get a hospitalization plan, which we used for LO's birth and have kept. i went to cancel it a few months after L&D and was told that they no longer offer the plan but those that have it can keep it. so if i cancelled i wouldn't be able to get it back. we decided to keep it for a couple more years.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • Thanks for the information, everyone.  Hopefully some of these places start calling me back so I can get some information specific to my state.
