Learning to read question

DD has been "reading" a sizable list of sight words for a while now.  Recently she's started to figure out how to sound out words and is very enthusiastic about trying.  We got some of the "I can read!" and other similar step into reading books at the library and those she doesn't want to touch.  She says they're boring and I can't say that I disagree with her.  Most of them are beyond watered down and awful.

Are there any books for VERY early readers that are actually good reads?  What books did your kids latch onto as they were trying to read.

She did really well the other night with a Llama Llama book, sounding out simple words, and using the beginning sound and picture cues to help her out.

Re: Learning to read question

  • What about some of the Dr Seuss books?  They are simple and rhyming words.  Those were some of the first that Noah read to me.
  • Ditto Dr. Seuss. Green Eggs and Ham was the first book Heather read cover to cover. Also Sandra Boynton and the Frog & Toad books.

  • Why did I not think of Dr. Seuss.  I'll pull them out of Nolan's room for her.  Neither one of my kids like Sandra Boynton...but I'll check out the Frog and Toad books.  We've never read them.

  • Green Eggs and Ham was EJ's first book she read to me too.  There are others in the Dr Seuss Beginners series which are easy reads. She also really enjoys the Piggy and Elephant books by Mo Williams.
