How Do I Repaint Wooden Art?

I have two large pieces of wooden carved art that I got from Pier 1.  I love them but the colors no longer match my decorating.  I want to repaint them with different colors.  The color is very hard to sand off and there are smaller crevises that I'm not sure I could even sand.  Does anyone have a suggestion on how to do this?

Re: How Do I Repaint Wooden Art?

  • I would just do several coats of the color you want over the top (you may need three or four, depending on how dark the original paint is) and not even bother sanding it.
  • @lovesclimbing Thank you! Should I paint it with primer?
  • @rayraex.  It's probably up to you.  I really don't know that much about painting.

You probably don't need primer just because the wood already has paint on it.  However, primer is usually cheaper than other types of paint (I think??) so it would probably be cheaper to do the first layer or two (depending on the darkness of the current paint) with primer.

Another thing to consider is the size of the art.  I'm guessing you won't need more than one can of paint (I'm picturing one gallon cans - like house paint), even to do several coats.  So it would be more costly to buy a can of primer and a can of paint if you could do several coats with just one can.  I hope that makes sense.
  • @lovesclimbing Thanks for your insight!
