Is this true? Taxes?

We heard yesterday that the IRS extended the start date that they will accept filings for the 2013 returns. It was the 20th and now they moved it to the 31st. Is this true?

Re: Is this true? Taxes?

  • I tried to e-file on the 17th and will be mailing my return today. I had gotten confirmation my e-file was accepted but minutes later, received an email that I had to mail my return instead. They will start reviewing them on the 31st.
  • I'm jealous.  The forms I need to file mine never get mailed until the IRS says they have to.  So that means I don't even start getting stuff until early February. :(

I know! We are waiting on forms from the kids' 529s! Won't be out until after January 31st! At least everything is pretty much ready to go with the other things. We are doing TurboTax this year instead of the CPA we have used since 2006. DH is doing it, which is awesome because I am usually the one to compile everything for the CPA. I think we will do just fine using TurboTax. But, I'm glad last year we had the CPA...we sold a home, moved, bought a home, and had to file in IA, KY, MN and federally. It was so much paperwork. Plus, we had done the 2008 home buyers tax credit on the home we sold and that required some extra knowledge. Having the CPA for 2012 taxes rocked even though we had to pay him $765 for his work.
  • Yes the IRS isn't accepting returns until January 31st. It's because of the govt shut down in the fall. I strongly recommend that you wait to file until at least February 2nd since the IRS is going to get SLAMMED when they first open. Last year they opened late and when they did, it was a huge clusterf$ck.
