Recs for British History?

I just got back from the UK and am itching to learn more about Britain's past. I like reading history in chronological order, so I'd like to start with the first millennium. What are your favorite books and/or authors? Non-fiction and historical fiction are both fine. Thanks!

Re: Recs for British History?

  • Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett! I don't know if it's quite in the first millennium but it's right at the turn of millennium if it's not.

  • How academic do you want it?  I have several medievalist friends and I could get some recs from them depending on how in depth you're wanting to go.

  • Pillars of the Earth was amazing.
  • Try Alison Weir when you get to the Tudor era.  She does both historical fiction and non-fiction.  I believe she's an official royal biographer so she knows her stuff.

  • Historical fiction

    London by Edward Rutherford
    Sarum by Edward Rutherford
The Autobiography of Henry VIII by Margaret George
    Elizabeth I by Margaret George

    Non-fiction
A Magnificent Obsession by Helen Rappaport

  • In addition to the recs above, I really like Anne Easter Smith's books.  Her books are set during the War of the Roses.

  • Karen Harper also wrote a really good book about Anne Boleyn from Mary's POV.  I haven't seen many like it.  It's called The Last Boleyn.

  • When you get to the Edwardian period Andrew Marr's The making of a modern Britain is really good. it goes through WW II and is a great over view from 1901 through 1945ish as is its follow up A history of modern Britain which covers post WWII through to early 2000s

  • Thanks, all.  I haven't found much in the way of easily-understood Medieval texts, so I'm going to start with The Pillars of the Earth.  I'm #12 on hold at the library, so I'll have to focus on something else for the time being. :)
