Avery's Birth Story (and announcement!) - to be continued

Sorry it took so long for me to post, I've been mostly mobile and was out of commission for a few days.

I went in for my pre induction appointment on Tuesday, January 14th with the assumption I'd be heading home for a few hours afterwards to start the induction process. Matt and I were planning on a nice lunch and finishing up some cleaning around the house. During the appointment my blood pressure shot up to 170/90-something and I was immediately directed to go to labor and delivery to be monitored. At this point I was a fingertip dilated and 50% effaced (I think...).

Once at L&D my pressure dropped into the normal range when I was laying down, but the second I would sit up or move out of bed it would go back up into the 140's and 150's. Quickly, I was put on bed rest with the exception of being allowed to go to the bathroom. This lead to me being in major pain in my back, because I have a bad back at times and I can't physically lay flat. I'm still in pain from it all today. After a lovely hospital dinner they started me on cervadil for 12 hours. It was a really rough night and as it continued I began having some contractions and cramping, poor H didn't know what to do. They allowed me to have nubain for the pain and I drifted off to sleep very quickly. When they checked me Wednesday morning I had made basically no progress and was at maybe a centimeter. The doctor decided to insert a foley catheter to see if that progressed anything, it was awful. Once it was over it wasn't noticeable at all. I spent the majority of the day laying down and on a monitor off and on. The doctor checked me around 5 pm and discovered that I had progressed to 2 centimeters and the foley had fallen out (the nurse later said she wasn't sure if it was in correctly, because it was supposed to fall out at 3).

I was put back on cervadil for several hours, I'm really not sure how many because at this point I was just very out of it and in pain. When I was checked again I hadn't progressed further, but the doctor decided to start me on pitocin. I immediately started having irregular, but very painful contractions. I requested another nubain and told the nurse I would want an epidural soon. Her response was "I don't think the doctor will give it this early. I'll let her know." I passed out from the nubain and apparently DH flipped on the nurse and demanded to know how much longer I was going to be put through this.

I woke up a few hours later in the worst pain ever and again requested an epi - it was again put off. H flipped out again. The nurse agreed with him and apologized. I was given another dose of nubain and passed out until morning. When I woke up a new doctor had taken over as the on call. He walked in, talked to me for a little bit ... realized that I was still only 2 centimeters and he couldn't even break my water. He tried, twice. He looked at me and looked at DH and said "We can do this 2 ways. We can continue and you won't progress or we can just do a c-section. I'm guessing you want option number 2."

Within a half hour I was whisked off to the OR and Avery arrived at 9:40 am on January 16th. She weighed 7 lbs, 15 1/2 oz and was 19 3/4 inches long. She was stuck in my rib cage and they had to use suction to get her out.

She's awake! I'll finish later!
