Not getting into specifics, but do you put money towards retirement... one way or another?

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • Yes, I put a small amount, but it's not much right now.  Since we are doing the Dave Ramsey thing it says to pay off debt before contributing to retirement.  But I don't want to contribute nothing, so I put a small amount in at least.

  • Yep. Especially with an employer who matches. I ain't going to turn down free money!

H and I paid off debts, then put almost every extra penny in to retirement savings for a few years. We have a pretty good size fund started, so we scaled back and put those pennies towards the house.

We will Reevaluate (sp? Auto correct says so) once the house stuff is finished and we are back to one mortgage, but I imagine we will always be saving something.

  • Since I am a teacher, they take so much out of each paycheck to put in the state employees retirement fund. So technically I save that way. We have way too many other debts right now to even afford a 403b or anything like that but I would like to start something like that soon.

Yep we actually started it last year after DH got out of his new employee probationary period. :)

ETA He's putting in 3% and his employer matches it, so 6% total. We are going to do more soon, just want to make sure we can afford it.

  • Yes. DH has put 10% in every year, and my district/state automatically set up a retirement account for me.

  • Yep! We both put away into 401ks. I started with 6% when I was 22 to get the full company match, and 5 years ago set it to increase a percent every year. I'm up to 11% this year. I don't know what DH is at. I also get profit sharing deposited into my 401k by my company each year.

  • My company matches 8% of each of my paychecks/my total annual salary to put to a 401k regardless of what I put in. I'm very ashamed to admit that I have yet to contribute anything myself. I've been trying to get our finances at home a little more under control before setting aside more from each of my paychecks. I really need to stop doing that.

  • I upped my contribution to 13% today. My company matches 6% I think. DH is a state employee so they have mandatory contributions.

  • We're pretty fortunate when it comes to retirement savings. I save 14% of my pay in my 401(k) and 6% in my Roth 401(k). H saves 5% of his pay, but he also has a pension of 80% of his most recent salary band. We'll probably live better in retirement than we do now.
