What size bike?

We're planning on getting dd a bike for her birthday.  But I'm unsure of what size...she's turning 5 and is 41 inches tall.

What size bike did  your kid ride when they were 5?  16 inch wheels?

Re: What size bike?

  • So, we had a bigger bike for EJ when she was using training wheels. It was a 16inch tire I believe.  But once we took the trainers off it was too big for her to balance/stop as her feet didn't really reach the ground well at the lowest setting.  So I went and got her a 12 inch tire bike for her to use last year and she took to it much faster and was zooming around the cul-de-sac with the other kids in no time. I expect she should be tall enough this year for the 16inch bike. So my advice is to find a 12in second hand and use it until she gets the hang of the 2 wheeler!
  • We got dd a bike last year for her birthday.  I believe it's 16 inches.  She can peddle it but she needs to put some power into it and that frustrates her.  She did grow a couple of inches since she last road the bike, so I'm hoping this spring she will be more confident with it.  She probably could have handled a 12 inch better last year, but she's tall and we would probably be buying another bike this year.

  • We have a 16 inch for Mason.  But I agree with Amanda's point - it will probably be too tall for him when we take the training wheels off.
  • Hmm...I've seen a few 14 inch bikes...I wonder if they would be a good compromise.

  • Before Christmas last year we told her we needed to help santa and had her sit on a  few different bikes to get a feel. We did also go with the 16 inch but at first it was too big for her. Maybe even make sure where you buy has a good return policy.
  • I would go to an actual bike store (not Target, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart) and ask them. My mom always went to the local bike store and our bikes always fit and really they are not much more money. Plus, they would do the adjustments after we received them so they fit properly.
