I'm really enjoying the book, it's definitely a quick read.
Are there legends, stories, whatever about water horses? I'm having some trouble fully emerging myself in the story because flesh-eating water horses are a completely new concept to me and the author doesn't go into a ton of detail describing them. I think the writing is beautiful, but it's all rather vague and I think that is making viewing the water horses as "real" hard for me.
I'm frustrated with the way some of the characters are acting. Obviously I hate Gabe, and I'm frustrated that Puck doesn't just write him off. There's not a lot of detail about Gabe ever being anything other than a complete jerk so it makes it hard to understand why Puck cares so much that he's leaving (other than the monetary aspect). Also it's confusing to me why everyone just goes about their daily business when there is a major threat of being eaten by a horse. Like why is Sean training Fundemental in the water. I get that he has a lookout but maybe everyone could avoid going in the water for the months of October and November? From what I've read so far my understanding is that the water horses are only around certain times of the year so why would people not alter their routines to avoid the very real risk that they could be killed. Also Puck is kind of frustrating me in that I feel likes she's living in a bit of a fairy tale land. She's entering Dove in the race but not making any real moves to get her ready (if getting her ready is even remotely possible). It's fairly obvious that Dove is anywhere near as fast as any of the other horses so what is Puck's plan?
I like all the detail about the townspeople and feel like I have a good grasp on the goings on of the town but I could use some more details on other aspects of the story. There keeps being references to training but no real detail as to what people are doing to train their horses (other than getting injured). Also, is this island the only place these horses exist or are they an issue everywhere there's water? Do Puck and Finn go to school? Puck is maybe old enough to not go to school but is Finn? What do they do all day when Puck is not "training" since they don't have jobs?
It may not seem like it but I am really enjoying the book I just think there are a few gaps that will maybe (hopefully) get filled in as the story progresses.

I read this one a while ago, and really really loved it. I'll take a stab at answering some questions, although I may not be remembering all the details.
-I read somewhere (MS's blog maybe?) that in doing research on myths and legends for the Shiver and fae series, she kept coming across flesh-eating and/or swimming horses, and she loved those stories so much she wanted to incorporate them. But they didn't fit. Thus, SR became a whole new book on its own. I personally have never come across any of these legends, so it was all new to me.
-I think the Gabe thing is more about keeping the family together and being there for the younger brother. And to keep them from starving to death.
-I think Puck is too old for school but isn't she trying to be a craftsman of some sort, carrying on whatever place her parents had in the community? I think Finn does go to school but don't remember why I think this.
I haven't read the Shiver series but I read the first book in The Raven Cycle and really enjoyed it.
I've had this book on my TBR list for a while, most likely due to being recommended on here, but I had been putting it off because I didn't think I would like it based on the description.
I'd never heard of the water horses and honestly I thought this book was just about regular horse racing, lol. I actually like the added element of the water horses, even though at this point I agree that it is a bit confusing.
I agree with the Gabe hate. I am assuming/hoping he gets redeemed later on? At this point, I am not a fan of Puck either. She seems extremely naive. Also, I agree with you, what does she do all day when not training for this race? She needs to find a better way to contribute.
I'm liking the book so far, even though I am not so fond of some of the characters. I am excited to find out what happens next. Especially with the piebald mare

I loved this book. I listened to it and it's been one of my favorite audiobooks.

The Raven Boys is awesome but a bit hard to follow. That is why I want to do a reread before continuing.
I frickin wish there were good book signings around us. I've never been to one either!@SFGiantsjo posted a website for a bookstore in Richmond that sells signed copies of her books. She even does little doodles in them.
Of course we can be GR friends! My name is the same on there.
