  • Nope and I never will!

  • No, but I was summoned once when I lived in DC. Once I went through the whole list of questions and info, they realized I hadn't lived there long enough to be able to serve. I've not been summoned since.

  • Twice, but I never served on a jury. I was summoned all the time in Florida when I was in NY for college when finally they basically said, "Okay, when ARE you home in Florida? Because you're serving jury duty then. Or you're surrendering your Florida license." I have no idea how right or legal that was, but I was 21, I didn't want to argue. I was there for half a day, watched some movies, and then got called for a panel but they settled before they could start jury selection. We were told if we wanted to leave, we could, but we would not get our whopping ten dollar juror compensation or whatever, so I left.

The second time was here in NY, maybe two years ago? I forget how long ago. But I was on a panel and this time went through questioning. I won't get in to why I got off, but it was a case in regards to gun control, I disagreed with some laws that were going to be an issue, and I think they were eager to not have to argue with people about it. That I did for almost a day and a half before I was let go.

The good thing is, I now still have another three or so years that I can't be called!

Wow, I guess being bored waiting for them to close work for the snow has made me feel like rambling about jury duty, ha ha.

  • First thing any attorney worth a damn does during voire dire is get rid of any smart people, which is why you guys didn't make it through questioning ;)

(on the off chance any of you did make it through, you probably had an unusually decent human being as the defendant)

  • I got called about 2 years ago and was very nearly on the jury for the trial of a guy accused of breaking into and burglarizing a local pizza place. And when I say 'very nearly', I mean they were just about to swear us in when they realized they had 13 people in the box when they only needed 12, and they sent me home. I was out of work for 1 day.

And you know, I'll never be able to prove this, but I'm convinced they dismissed me because I work in mental health. There were 2 other social workers and a psychiatrist in the screening with me, and they all got sent home as well. I guess they think we therapists are such bleeding hearts that we can't be impartial, LOL.

That's funny! I bet one of the reasons you almost made it was actually BECAUSE they assumed as a therapist you would be extra sympathetic :)

  • I got a notice about being summoned for it. I got out of it (I'm assuming) for knowing two cops. I did also add that I felt my constant sneezing could be a distraction, so that may have helped.

  • I have and ended up being selected.  I really have no idea why and I was especially pissed because I had to reschedule a surgery for it, even though I told them I already had it scheduled.  I don't remember the full details, but it was for this girl that had already been found guilty of robbing of gas station and the this trial was to determine whether or not the cops had mistreated and assaulted her when they were trying to arrest her.  It lasted about a week.  I actually didn't mind it.  The trial was interesting and it got me out of work.

@ystaalenburg I bet it was because you are a girl and the girl was the one assaulted that you got selected.

I didn't mean to say that people who get selected are dumb, it's just an old joke in law school that people say.  My aunt who went to MIT got selected once, so that is definitely not the case ;)

No worries :)  I was 19 at the time, so they probably thought I was dumb!

  • No but I want to!

  • Nope, never even been summoned. I'm kind of surprised, actually.

MIL got summoned and was going through the questioning process for a few days one time. It was for a murder trial in another city. They were selecting jurors from another city hoping they hadn't heard about the case. The guy had apparently slowly tortured a couple to death and she was in the room with the guy on trial and they asked her if she could be impartial and she said "I think he should fry!" and so they didn't let her be on the panel....gee, I wonder why!! haha

  • I was exempted for being away in college, then moving twice... Another time I didn't have an excuse, but both days I called and they said they didn't need me.

I try to add I'm an analyst so they don't bother.

  • I got called once. Went in and during questioning they realized I was leaving in 2 days to go back to college for the fall semester, they let me go home. I had to be 19 or 20.
  • Yes, I have and it was terrible.  I had to serve Federal jury duty.  Everyone else gets called to the county court house, I had to go to southern Manhattan.  My commute was like an hour and a half each way.  I got called for a civil case between two companies taking down one of the buildings  affected by the September 11th attacks.  It was right across from the World Trade Center.  The case was 2 and a half weeks long during the first few weeks of the school year.  I was about to ask the judge to excuse me when the woman next to me asked for the same reason.  He wouldn't have excused two people.

It was like 90 degrees outside and like 50 degrees in the court house.  I was bringing a giant bag of clothes to wear because I was so cold sitting in the court room.  The security guards looked at me like I was crazy every day.

On the plus side, they had snacks and continental breakfast for us every day.  They had the most delicious cookies I think I've ever eaten.  The lunch they served us on deliberation day was pretty good, too.  :)
  • I got notices 3 times. The first I almost got to questioning but they settled the case. It was for attempted murder. The next time I just got the notice to call in and never actually had to appear. The third time I was waiting in the jury room when they announced to everyone that it would be a 2 week case and whoever couldn't commit to that could leave so I did.
